INVENTOR ATTORNEY "I E i I UNITE!) NAPIER-BLISS CONNECTICUT.

To all to 710m it may concern.
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnrcn' W. RET- TENMEYER, a citizen of the Unlted States,
residing at Meriden, county of New Haven,
State. of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Mesh-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ladies handbags and has for an object to improve the means by which such bags are carried and also to provide an improved means for securing a powder-box or similar receptacle to the bag so that it will be convenient to use and will not become lost.
In the preferred construction a powden box or similar receptacle is secured to the frame of the mesh bag by means of a flexible connection of the desired length, the re ceptacle being adapted for use as a grip or carrying piece for the bag.
In connection with a more detailed description of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the bag complete with the receptacle attached thereto and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle detached.
Reference numeral 1 indicates the body of the bag which is made of some flexible material preferably of ring mesh, but it may be of any other suitable material such as leather or silk. This flexible body is secured to the usual frame 2 which comprises two members hinged together so that they may be opened to give access to the bag and are provided with any suitable catch 3. A
ring or eye 4: is secured to the frame 2 and a flexible connection 5 is secured to this ring or eye in any desirable manner. This flexible connection may be a short piece of chain, a strap, braided cord or other suitable construction.
The grip which is secured to the other end of the flexible connection 5 serves as a powder-box or similar receptacle. In the form illustrated it comprises two sections, a body-section 6 and a cover'section 7, secured together in any desired manner, but preferably by a hinge 8 at one edge and a suitable catch at the opposite edge. The lower or body section is provided with an Specification of "Letters Patent.

eye 9 preferably located in the center thereof as shown, to which the flexible connection 5 .1s securec. The box or receptacle, preferably of metal, is shown in the drawings as octagonal in, shape but it obviously may be round or any other desiredshape. It is to contain the usual powder-puff with a mirror on the inside of the cover section 7. It may, howsver, be used to carry any article desire In carrying the bag, the boX or receptacle serves as a convenient grip resting snugly and comfortably in the hand, and
it may be conveniently carried with the flexible connection 5 extending between the fingers. When carried in this way the box rests comfortably in the curve on the inside of the fingers of the partly closed hand. It wlll also be clear that the box is convenient for use, easlly accessible as it is not necessary to open thebag to use the articles in the box and 1s permanently attached to the bag and therefore cannot be lost. Furthermore because of its location outside of the bag it of course does not reduce the limited space wlthin' the bag and does not interfere with the removal and insertion of articles.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is- 1. The combination of a bag, a grip therefor, a flexible connection between the bag and the grip, said grip comprising two sectlons secured together and shaped to form a receptacle.
2. A hand-bag of the class described comprising a flexible body portion, a grip and a flexible connection secured at one end to the body-portion and at the other end to the a grip, said grip comprising a plurality of sectlons forming a receptacle for a powder-puff or other articles.
3. .A hand-bag comprising a flexible body portion secured to a frame adapted to allow access to the bag, a grip, and a flexible connection secured at one end to the frame and at the other end to the grip, said grip comprising a plurality of connected sections shaped to form a closed receptacle.
4:. A hand-bag comprising a flexible body portion secured to a frame adapted to allow access thereto, a grip comprising two sections hinged together and shaped to provide a closed receptacle, and a flexible connection between the frame and the grip and secured v to the grip at substantially the center of one 5 of its sections.
5. A hand-bag comprising a body portion, and means for carrying the body'portion comprising a grip and means for securing the grip to the body portion, said grip being constructed to form a receptacle for 10 a toilet or like article.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FREDERICK RETTENMEYER.
