Description

PATENT FFIGE.
ANDREW GRIMM, OF UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,063, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW GRIMM, of Union Hill, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Table Leaf Hinge, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved table-leaf hinge, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the same, with parts out off to show interior construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved hinge for sewing machine and other tables, by which the hinged connection is established in shorter time and in stronger manner, so as to prevent the tearing out of the hinge from the table edge and the annoyance caused thereby. My invention consists in a novel combination, with a table having a hinged leaf, of a hinge having its pintle directly under the leaf-joint, one wing being screwed to the leaf while the other is formed in the shape of a slide-piece, which moves in a recessed casing screwed to the table, and to be acted on by chambered springs of suitable strength, while the leaf is rested on a projectin g shoulder of the casin g.
A represents one wingplate of my improved hinge, which is applied by screws in the usual manner, countersunk or otherwise, to the table leaf. In place of the other wing-plate hitherto set into the outer edge of the table, a slidepiece, B, is pivoted bya metallic sleeve or end piece, a, to the pivot pin or pintle b of the hinge, and arranged to slide in a suitably-recessed guide-casing, O, of suitable material,.
7 that is attached to the table at some distance from the edgein a strong and secure manner, by means of fastening-screws d. Spiral or other springs D are set in the casing (J, and arranged to act on sideprojecting arms 6 of the slide-piece B, for the purpose of allowing the same to be drawn in outward direction by the raising of the leaf, while returning and securing the leaf in pendent position on the lowering of the same.
The parts of the hinge may be cheaply manufactured and quickly applied without weakenin g the table or leaf in the least, supplying thereby a good and convenient table-leaf hinge for sewing-machines and other purposes.
The lower front part of easing D projects such distance toward the edge of the table that it forms a shoulder or rest, f, below the sleeve part of win g-plate A, by which the leaf is retained when thrown down in an exact vertical position to the table.
I am aware of Patent No. 131,478, wherein the hinged pintle is back of the joint, and the bolt so attached .to the leaf and the two springs to the two leaves that the falling leaf (when pendent) rests on a side shoulder; but
What I claim is- The combination, with table having hinged leaf, of the hinge A B, having pintle 1) directly under the hinge-joint, and a case, G, having projection f, and connected with leaf by chambered springs D D, as and for the purpose specified.
ANDREW GRIMM.
