Description

F.R.W0LF1NGER.
TABLE-HINGE.
No.185,613 Patented Dec.19,1876
Iii/3.1
WITNEEEEE: INVENTD UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS R. WOLFINGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO D. B. HOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-HINGES'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,613, dated December 19, 1876; application filed October 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class ot tablehinges which require the leaf to be moved laterally for raising or lowering the same, and which form the support for the leaf when raised; and the nature of my invention consists in pivoting both leaves of the hinge upon a pin that is recessed in the under side of the table, and providing each leaf ofthe hinge, on its under side, with a wide flange, the verticaledges of which flanges abut against each other, and hold the leaf of the table in an elevated position.
When itis desired to lower the leaf itis pushed far enough sidewise to move the edges of the danges past each other, when the leaf is free to close, as will be hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
ln the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, Figure l is an inverted view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part of the hinge.
A represents a part of the table, to which the leaf B is hinged. The hinge is composed oi' two leaves, C and D,l fastened, respectively, tothe under sides of the table and leaf. The outer end of the leaf C is turned upward, or formed with an upward enlargement,.a', which is let into the under side of the table a short distance inward from the outer edge thereof, and from this enlargement projects the center-pin b in a recess in the under side of the table.
The leaf C is further, near its outer end, provided with a wing or bracket, a', at one side, the outer edge of said bracket forming a shoulder, d, at' right angles with the table. At the base of this bracket there is formed a recess, e, extending also into the edge of the leaf, as shown.
The leaf D projects beyond the edge of the table-leaf, and on its outer end is formed the barrel h, which is placed on the center-pin b. This leaf D is also provided with a projecting wing or bracket, D', forming a shoulder, d; but the side of this wing or bracket is formed perfectly straight, except at the edge or shoulder d', Where is formed an inclined or tapering iange, i, as shown. The two parts of the hinge are held close together by means of a spring, x, on the end of the pin b. This spring need not be used except on one of the hinges for the same table.
When the table-leaf is let down the flange t' enters the recess c', and in raising the leaf this tlange, riding over the inclined face of said recess, forces the table-leaf gradually sidewise, so that said flange will pass the bracket a, As soon as the table-leaf is raised toits horlzontal position, the spring x forces it back again, causing the shoulders d d of the brackets a D to abut against each other and thus support the leaf.
By arranging the center-pin b of the hinge above the under side of the table, as shown and described, this class of hinges is adapted to what is called a rule-joint. It is also adapted for an ogee joint by arranging the center-pins even with the under side of the table; and in neither case is the hinge exposed when the leaf is let down, and the leaf hangs close instead of away from the table.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hinge for tables, consisting ofthe leaves C D, which are pivoted on the pin b, and which are provided with the flanges a D', having the straight edges d d', t'or supporting the leaf of the table in an elevated position, one ot" the pins being provided with a spring, cc, and both of them, preferably, recessed in the under side ofthe table, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the have hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS R. WOL FINGER Witnesses D. B. Hoon, P. HANRAHAN.
