To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that weflVILLIAM W. JOHNSTON and \VILLIAu Tnos. \VATTs, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Doniphan, in the county of Ripley and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-\Vriter Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to desks, and particularly to means for supporting a type-writer thereon, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character whereby the type-writer may when not in use be readily enteredinto its compartment within the desk, one in which the type-writer-carrying leaf or table may be moved to operative position, and one wherein the door of the compartment performs the further function of a retaining member for supporting the leaf in active position.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken centrally through the type-writer-receiving compartment of the desk. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said compartment, showing the door in open position. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the pivoted section of the door in folded position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a desk which, except as hereinafter explained, is of the usual or any appropriate construction and material, it being understood in this connection that while the desk is illustrated herein as being of the cabinet or flat-top type it may be of the ordinary roller-top construction.

In accordance with this invention the desk is provided with a compartment 2, having at its rear end vertical weight-guides 3, designed to receive weights 4:, suspended from flexible elements or cords which in turn travel over guide-pulleys (l and are engaged at one end' with a typc-writencarrying leaf or table 7, said leaf being pivoted at its normally inner or upper end by means of hinges 8 to the top of the desk and within the compartment 2. It is to be observed in this connection that the leaf or table normally hangs in a substantially vertical position wholly within the compartment and that under these conditions the weights 4 are, through the medium of the cords 5, drawn to a position at the upper ends of the guides 3, it being understood that the weights are sufficiently heavy to counterbalance the leaf when a type-writing machine is in position thereon for a purpose which will presently appear.
