"UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
IVILLIAM H. OKEEFE, OF LOCKP'ORT, NEW YORK.
ROLLER-TOP DESK AND TYPE-WRITER STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26,1906.
Application filed April 13, 1905. Serial No. 255.290-
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. OKEEFE, a resident of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Top Desks and Type-Writer Stands; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved rollertop desk and type-writer stand, the object of the invention being to provide a table or desk with folding ends adapted to be moved to an upright position and provide a rollertop adapted to roll over or into the ends and form a closed cabinet and when not desired can be slid back out of the way and the ends dropped to their horizontal position.
l/Vith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing my improvements in closed cabinet form. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing it open. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section, and Fig. 4 is a plan view. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view showing the bracing means for the ends 3.
1 represents the table. or desk top supported at its ends by standards 2 and provided with extension ends 3, connected thereto by hinges 4. These hinged ends 3 are preferably of the general curved shape shown and provided with grooves 5 around their curved edges.
6 represents a flexible roll-top normally located in vertical grooves 7 in the rear of standards 2, and when the hinged ends 3 are moved to a vertical position the ends of their grooves 5 will aline with grooves 7 and permit the roll-top 6 to run therein and form a closed cabinet, as clearly shown, to inclose a type-Writer or other device, and any suitable j lock may be provided to lock the top in its 1 closed position.
To brace the ends and hold them in proper vertical position to receive the roll-top, I provide brace-bars 8, hinged at one end to the top 1 and normally resting in grooved brackets 9 and 10 in the ends and top, respectively. Grooved brackets 9 are provided at the proper place with locking-pins 11, behind which springs 12 are located. The upper ends of brace-bars 8 are notched, so that when the ends 3 are raised the free ends of bars 8 will move in the grooved brackets 9 and engage springs 12, which latter will be forced back until the notches of the bars are opposite the pins 11, when the springs will force the bars onto the pins and securely lock the ends in an upright position. To unlock the ends, the brace-bars are pressed down to depress springs 12, when the ends can be readily lowered to horizontal position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a table, of end pieces hinged thereto and adapted when turned down to rest flush with the upper surface of the table, communicating slots in said table and end extensions, brackets secured to the table within the slots, a brace pivoted to each bracket and normally resting in the slots in the table and end pieces when the latter are horizontal, a bracket in the slots of each end piece, locking means on the braces for engaging the brackets in end pieces when the latter are turned up, and springs for holding said braces in engagement with the locking means on the brackets.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. OKEEFE.
