To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, OHARLns G. QUAGK- ENBUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and Stateof Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tables and par ticularly to a combined article of furniture which may ordinarily serve the purpose of a table and which will consist of parts cooperatively associated with each other and constructed whereby they may be adjusted relatively and the device quickly converted into a bed.

An object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character wherein the necessity of removing any part thereof may be eliminated when it is desired to convert the article into a bed, and further the provision of an adjustable top which may be shifted from one position to another without disturbing objects which may be mounted thereon.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined and convertible article of furniture wherein the bed clothing may be readily folded into the spring-receiving space of the articleto be completely housed therein when the article is in its initial form of a table.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a table which will be provided with a sliding top and means for limiting the adjustment of the top in one direction and for positively holding the top against accidental derangement.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable side member which may be wholly carried by the sliding top and which will be adjustable thereon so that it may be folded to lie parallel therewith when the top is adjusted during the operation of converting the article into a With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table; Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, showing the top adjusted to expose the bed spring; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the table converted into a bed; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the device when converted to form the article shown in Fig 3; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the top; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the sides; Fig. 7 is a section through a portion of the top and through a portion of one of the sides of the device; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a portlon of the supporting rail for the adjustable side of the device; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the traveling head for supporting said adjustable side from the rai The article comprises vertical sides 1, a bottom 2, a permanent back wall 3, a comblnedtop and drawer deck 4, and an adjustable side wall 5. The sides 1 may be connected to the bottom in any obviou well known manner, and as illustrated braces 6 may be connected between the bottom and the supporting legs 7 of the sides, so as to furnish rigidity at these points and at the same time add to the ornamentation of the article. The sides 1 are provided with upper horizontal rail 8, which are provided on their inner surfaces with longitudinal grooves 9. At the rear ends, the grooves are closed so as to provide vertical stop shoulders 10, while at the opposite end the grooves are arranged in open communica tion with vertical relatively long recesses 11 which open at their upper ends to the horizontal upper surfaces of the rails. Adjacent the rear ends the rails are provided with substantially U-recesses 12, in which are mounted respectively vertical and horizontal rollers 13 and 14, the latter having portion projected slightly beyond the Vertical inner surfaces of the rails while the former are projected slightly above the up per horizontal surfaces of the rails for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.

The combined top and drawer deck 4 is provided with depending end rails 15, a back rail 16 and suitable bottom pieces 17, which are adapted to accommodate slidin drawers 18 which may be adjusted from the front of said top wall, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The top L is extended, as at 19, so as to overhang the upper horizontal surfaces of the rails 8, the under sides of the extension being adapted to travel over the anti-friction rollers 13. The vertical end rails 15 are adapted to travel over the horizontal anti-friction bodies 14.

Adjacent the front ends the side rails 15 are provided with brackets 20, which are mounted so that their outer surfaces come flush with the outer surfaces of said rails 15, and as shown said brackets support ver-.

This is also desirable in that the article may be knocked down for shipment or storage. The rollers or anti-friction bodies 21 of the bracket plates 20 are adapted to travel on the lower walls 22 of the slots 9 when the top is adapted to be shifted to operative or inoperative positions. The rear roller of each of the bracket plates is adapted to contact with the stop walls 10, so as to limit the sliding adjustment of the stop and prevent the same from being accidentally withdrawn from the.

rails. hen the top is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 3, the rollers 21 are adapted to engage against the upper walls 23 of the grooves 9, whereby to brace the top and prevent the same from sagging. The end rails 15 of the top 4 are provided with horizontal anti-friction bodies 2& that are adapted to travel on the lower vertical surfaces 25 of the rails 8.

The back wall 3 of the table terminates slightly below the bottom of the combined top anddrawer deck i, so as to form an intervening slot 26 therebetween. At the bottom the combined top and drawer deck is provided with tracks 27, which are horizontally-disposed and spaced from the bottom of the top & and which extend approximately for the full width of the top. The front adjust-able wall 5 of the table is hingedly mounted at 28 to traveling plates 29, said plates being provided with companion side sets of rollers 30, which are peripherally grooved, as at 32, to receive the opposite side edges of the tracks 27. From this construction, it is evident that the wall 5 may be swung to a horizontal position and then adjusted to lie parallel beyond the bottom of the combined top and drawer deck 4: and extended through the slot 27, so as to be sus tained by the edge 33 of the back wall 3 when converting the table into a bed.

Connected through the medium of plates 3& to the ends 1 is a spring structure 35 including main sections 36, whichare connected with the studs 37 of the plates 3a, said studs being provided with winged nuts 38 for holding the sections 36 in applied position. The remaining sections 39 of the spring structure :are pivotally connected-with-each other and may be of any obvious well known construction so as to permitof the spring being folded to the position shown in Fig. 2. Certain of the sections of the spring structure are provided with folding supporting legs 40, which may also be ofany well known construction whereby they may be folded with the sections when the spring structure is folded into the spring space ll of the article. The fabric spring 42 is also of a form which will permitof its being folded into the space 41 together with the sections 36 and 39 and the mattress L3 and the bed clothing.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing anyof the advantages of this invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a convertible article of furniture, a table having a slidably mounted top, and a hinged side wall forming a part of the table and mounted for sliding movements on said p, for engaging the hinged wall when the top is in one position, whereby to hold said hinged wall against swinging movement.

2. In a convertible article of furniture, a table provided with a sliding top, means for limiting the sliding adjustment of the top, rails supported from the top, a verticall swinging side slidably supported from said rails, and means for supporting said side in a horizontal position.
