I Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. WILSON,

a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mechanical Chair, of which the following is a specification.

My invention comprises a novel construction of punching bag holder in combination.

with a support preferably in the form of a chair.

' A further purpose of my invention is to provide for attachment of a punching bag having either a single or double support and to limit the vertical movement of the bag singly supported.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. V

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of a construction similar to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents, in perspective, the top extension for the punching-bag support. Fig. 4 represents the constructionseen in Fig. 3 in folded position and in rear elevation. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 4.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings:1 designates the frame of a Morris chair having a seat 2 and sides 3, with a back 4 pivoted at any suitable point 5 to move about the segment 6 and provided with a catch 7 fitting-into any one of a plurality of openings 8 tosecure the back of the chair inlits adjustedvposition.

Upon the frame supports 3 and on each side of the chair is an arm piece 9 and a separable or auxiliary arm 9, which latter is pivoted at 10 to swing in two planes, making a universal joint in order that the arm may be used in any desired position, as more particularly pointed out in a co-pending application. For various uses it may beturned a quarter turn to attach at 10 or depressed and likewise turned to attach at 11.

In the base of the chair is provided an extensible rod 12 which can be partly withdrawn longitudinally to afford a lower point of attachment for my punching bag.

On the rear of the back portion 4 I place a frame 13 arranged to slide in guides 14 at the sides thereof and adapted to be secured in any suitable position by means of pins,

A thin rib, groove or other suitable conformation of edge 16 is arranged preferably to cooperate with the guides 14 to secure ready adjustment and support for the parts. The frame 13 is provided with any desirable or suitable cross pieces 17 or may be made solid if desired. Upon the upper surface of the frame 13, preferably at the back thereof, I hinge a frame 18 at any suitable point or points as 19 by a spring hinge tending to open the frames and retain, them in the position shown in Fig. 3 by a latch or stay 20, which automatically follows the rib 16 during the opening operation until the nose 20 of the latch fallsinto a hole 20. This frame 18 ,maythus be secured at substantially right angles to the frame 13. The frame 18 is arranged with. a guide or guard strip 21., prefer'ably forming two circles upon diiferent radii of a single piece of material, beginning in one circle and passing to the other at a point 21' ed by means of cord 24 at the common center 22 of these circles. The form stated is the formpreferably used when a single su port for the punching bag is desired. In t 1e form shown in Fig. 2, however, I have used a second cord or other attachment 25, by which the punching bag is attached at its lower end to the extended rod 12 and this form is quite desirable for some purposes. It will be evident that the guide or guard 21 is unnecessary to this form of double support and that it may, indeed, be omitted in some cases, the object being to supply as much or ,1 as little of the auxiliary devices as may be necessary for the proper maintenance of the punching bag and the convenience of the user.

It will be evident that the frame 18 is capable of folding and intended to fold close to the frame 13, where it latches by the snap 26 in the seat 26, and that the two frames are then together slid down to a position in which the upper part of the frame 13 is at or below It will be evident that this frame 13 ordinarily requires no attachment to secure it in its lower position, but that it may be held therein by the weight of the frame alone, and that there will be, under ordinary circumstances, no tendency for this frame to be moved out of this position. It will further be evident, however, that the pins or other attachments 15 may also readily secure the frame 13 in its lower or intermedi- The punching bag 23 is supportate position, and that the frame may be, therefore, secured in its lower position.

I have shown rollers 27 mounted in the back of the frame and held against too free rotation by means of a cord brake 28 which is in the form of a cord intertwined between adjoining rollers passing half around each of the adjoining rollers, but upon opposite sides thereof. For the purposes of this application the rollers are not essential, but are shown here to complete the illustration and will be further described and fully claimed in another application to be filed by me.

In the form shown in Fig. 2 I have made use of an auxiliary support or cord 29 to prevent undue strain upon the frame 13 and have attached the cord 29 in this instance to the arm 9 at the position shown by the aperture 30 and thumb screw 52. It will be evident that any other suitable means may be made use of for preventing undue strain upon the frame 13 and that the cord 29 may be attached to any of a plurality of points.

In the illustration in Fig. 2, I have shown hinges 31 by means of which the side supports 3 may be swung laterally and I have also shown a foot rest 32 with a hinge 33 for bringing the foot rest into available position. Both of these are useful for other purposes, but are unnecessary for the uses hereinbefore described to be made of my device and 1do not, therefore, need further illustration ere.

It will be evident that I make use of the back of a Morris chair and the arms thereof to supply a variety of punching bag arrangements and that each of the parts of the chair described pays tribute to the construction of my exerclser.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, a fixed support, a vertically slidable frame mounted thereon, bag-supporting means upon said frame, means for supporting said means in substantially horizontal position from the upper end of the frame, and means projecting from the lower portion of the support forming a lower point of attachmmit for the punching bag.

2. In a device of the character described, a support, a frame slidable thereon to nest within the back of said support, a second frame pivoted to said first mentioned frame, a punching bag support upon said second frame and a suitable auxiliary punching bag connection for the lower end of said bag 1no\* able within the lower part of the support.

8. In a device of the character described, a support having guides in the back thereof, a frame slidable in said guides, a second frame pivoted to the first frame, a punching bag support carried by said second frame, springs normally extending the second frame into horizontal right angular position. with respect to the first frame, and a rod automatically locking the second frame in an angular relation with the first frame when extended.

4. In a device of the character described, a support, a frame guided in the back of said support, a punching bag support upon said frame forming a point of attiwhment for a punching bag and a second point of attachment for the lower end of the bag variable with respect to the said support.

5. In a device of the character described, a frame for supporting a Inmching bag and a guard therefor, said. guard. comprising a single piece of material forming circles of different radii.

6. In a device of the character described, a support, a rod extensible therefrom, means connected with said rod for attachment to a punching bag, a frame guided in the back of the support, a second frame pivoted to the first frame and a punching bag support in said second frame above the rod when the latter is in extended position.
