To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that we, LEONARD B. PooLER, J OSEPH M. BAINER, and NICHOLAS V. EL- LIOTT, citizens of the United States, residmg at Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Attachments for Desks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw ng.
This invention relates to typewriter supports for desks and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be exceedingly simple in its construction and which may be readily applied to a desk without modifying the desk in any wa I urther, it is an object of the invention to provide such a support which will permit the typewriter to be moved forward and upward into operative position with but a s ngle movement of the support; and which will also support the typewrlter at all tlmes in a horizontal position.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a cabinet and to so arrangethe support that when in its retracted pos1t-1on the typewriter will be within the'cabinet In the accompanying drawings, Flgure 1 is a sectional view of a desk showing the invention applied thereto with the support in its extended position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the support in a retracted position; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, of a slightly modified form of the invention.
In these drawings we have illustrated one embodiment of our invention and have, for the purpose of illustration, shown the same applied to a desk comprising a fiat top 1 and two pedestals 2, one only of which is here shown. The support is mounted between the pedestals of the desk and is preferably supported from the top 1. The support for the typewriter comprises a platform 3 on which the typewriter is mounted and which may be of any construction which will properly support a typewriter. This platform is mounted in such a manner that it will be retained in substantially a horizontal position at all times and that it can be swung forwardly and upwardly or downwardly and rearwardly to move the platform into its eX- tended position and support the typewriter in its operative position or to move the tion. This movement preferably comprises 7 a single swinging movement of the platform and, to this end, the platform is provided with two groups of suspending links 1 arranged on the opposite sides of the platform and pivotally connected thereto at their lower ends. In the present construction we have secured to each side of the platform 3 a single pair of links but it will be obvious that the device will be operative with two or more links on each side. Each link is se cured at a point above its lower end and preferably near its upper end to the top of the desk 1 or some other fixed part of the supporting structure. In the present instance the top of the desk is provided with supporting members 5 which are in the form of depending brackets detachably secured to the under side of the desk top 1 and fixed with relation to the top. The links of each group are connected one to the other by means of connecting members 6 which, in the form of the device here shown, are connected to the upper ends of the links 4 of the respective groups at points beyond the pivotal connection between the links and their respective supporting members.
A suitable retaining device is provided which cooperates with the links to retain the typewriter platform 3 in either its extended position or its retracted position. Thi retaining device is preferably of a yielding character to permit the platform to swing across its central position and is here shown as comprising a pair of arms 7 arranged one on each side of the platform and pivotally connected at their upper ends to the desk top 1 at points between the supporting memhere 5 on the respective sides of the platform 8. Each arm 7 has a part, such as a pin 8, which engages the upper edge of the connecting member or bar 6. Inasmuch as the arm extends at an acute angle to the bar it will be apparent that any downward pressure on the arm will tend to resist the upward movement of the bar 6. A yielding pressure may be applied to the arm 7 in any suitable manner. In that form of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the arms 7 are curved forwardly and are connected by springs 9 with the top of the desk, or some other fixed part of the supporting structure. In that form shown in Fig. 3 the arms are substantially straight and are provided at their lower ends with a weight '10. In both instances that portion of the arm which intersects the corresponding connecting member 6 is arranged at an acute angle to that member and the pressure is exerted upon the arm in such a manner as to cause the pin 8 to exert a downward pressure upon the connecting member or bar.
It will be apparent that the movement of the platform 3 from either its extended or retracted position will cause the connecting members or bars 6 to move upward against the tension of the springs 9, in Figs. 1 and 2, and, as soon as the platform has passed its central position, that is, as soon as the links have passed their vertical positions, the bars 6 will move downward and the tension of the springs will tend to move the platform in the direction in which it is started, and, when it reaches the limit of its movement, will retain it in that position until suflicient pressure has been applied thereto to again overcome the tension of the springs. When the platform is in its extended position the links are substantially horizontal but when in its retracted position they extend at an acute angle to the platform. Consequently, when in their retracted position the connecting members are not moved downward as great a distance as when the platform is in its extended position. This, of course, would make a material difference in the pressure exerted upon the connecting members by the springs. To compensate in some measure for this difference in the posi tions ofthe connecting member we have, in the present instance, shown the same as curved so that that portion thereof which is engaged by the retaining device when the platform is in its retracted position is in a lower plane than that portion thereof engaged by the retaining device when the platform is in its extended position. This, however, is an optional construction and is not essential to the successful operation of the device. Further, it will be noted that the forward supporting members 5 are near the front edge of the'desk and, as the platform leaves its retracted position, it moves downward as well as forward until the supporting links have passed their vertical positions and then begins to move upward. This causes the platform to move upward in a position well in advance of the forward edge of the desk and, consequently, the typewriter which rests upon the platform will clear the edge of the desk and be supported wholly in front of the same. It will also be noted that the yielding retaining device prevents the sudden downward movement of the supporting platform and serves to cushion its movement. In this manner we are enabled to mount the support beneath a solid top desk and move the same into operative position with a single movement.

strong and durable and can be readily applied to an ordinary solid top desk without cutting the top or otherwise altering the desk; and further, that the construction is such that the machine will readily clear the forward edgeof the top and will be maintained in either its extended or retracted position until positive force has been applied thereto suflicient to overcome the pressure of the yielding retaining device, thus automatically locking the support in either position.
lVhile we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that we do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new anddesire to se- Q cure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a desk, and a platform arranged below said desk, of a pivoted device to support said platformin either of two positions, said device having a part arranged substantially parallel with said platform and movable into different planes as said platform moves fro-m one position to another, and a yieldable retaining device held normally in engagement with said part of said device to resist the movement of said platform from either of said positions.
2. The combination, with a desk, and a platform arranged below said desk, of a pivoted device to support said platform in either of two positions, said device having a part arranged substantially parallel with said platform and movable into different planes as said platform moves from one position to another, said part of said device having portions arranged at differentplanes, and a yieldable retaining device held normally in engagement with saidpart of said device and movable from one portion thereof to the other as said platform is moved from one position to the other, said retaining device serving to resistthe movement of said platform from either of said positions. 8. In a device ofthe character described, the combination, with a desk, stationary supporting members carried by said desk, and a platform supported beneath the same, of a group of links arranged on each side of said platform, the links of each group being pivotally connected at their lower ends to said platform and connected at points above their lower ends with the respective supporting members, a connecting member secured to the several links of one of said groups, and a yielding retaining device en gaging said connecting member to retain the platform at either limit of its movement.

In a device of the character described, the combination, with a desk, stationary supporting members carried by said desk, and a platform supported beneath the same, of a group of links arranged on each side of said platform, the links of each group being pivotally connected at their lower ends to said platform and connected at points between their ends with the respective supporting members, connecting members secured to the upper ends of the links of the respective groups, retaining devices engaging the respective connecting members, and means to exert a yielding pressure on said retaining devices.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a desk, and a platform supported beneath the same, of links pivotally connected at their lower ends with said platform and pivotally connected at points above their lower ends with said desk, a connecting member secured to those links which are connected to one side of said platform, and a yielding retaining device mounted on said desk and engaging said connecting member to resist the movement of said platform from either of two positions.
6. In a device of the character described,
links pivotally connected at their lower ends to the respective sides of said platform and pivotally connected at points above their lower ends with said desk, connecting members secured to the links of the respective pairs, a retaining device comprising an arm pivotally mounted on said desk and having a part adapted to engage one of said connecting members, and means to exert a yielding pressure on said arm to retain said part thereof in engagement with said connecting member.
7. In a device of the character described,
the combination, with a desk comprising a top, a plurality of supporting members secured to the under side of said top in fixed relation one to the other and to said top, and a platform, of two pairs of links arranged on the respective sides of said plat form, pivotally connected thereto at their lower ends and pivotally connected to said supporting members at points near their upper ends, connecting bars secured to the upper ends of the links of the respective bars, arms pivotally mounted on the under side of the desk top, projections carried by said arms and resting upon the upper sides of said bars, and springs connected with said arms and tending to hold said projections in engagement with their respective bars.
