To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SCHUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shock-Loaders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a rack for the convenient lifting of shocks of material, such as corn stalks, from the ground onto a vehicle and arranging the same thereon so that they may be easily transferred from the field, the construction being such that the loading and unloading may be effected from either side of the vehicle.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vehicle showing the manner of its use; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation, and Fig. 3 a` detail of the adjustable support for the lifting cable.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a suitable running gear, preferably a` standard farm wagon, upon which is laid a platform 11. This platform is provided at each end with a firmly braced post 12 and ends 13. Pivoted to each post 12 near its lower end is a standard 14, and the upper ends of these standards are connected by a bar 15, thus forming an inverted U -shaped structure which may be swung to either side of the vertical, the amount of movement being limited by guards 16, one of which embraces,
cach of the standards 14. The U-shaped structure is firmly braced, and mounted upon its bar 15 is a carriage 17 to which one end of the lifting cable 18 is attached. Carriage 17 carries a pulley block 19 through which the cable 1S passes, said cable passing from thence over an idler 20 supported at the upper end of the rear standard 14, and from thence through a pulley block 21 attached to the lower end of the rear post 12, the free end of the cable being' arranged to attach to the harness of a suitable draft animal, as shown.
The platform 11 is provided at each corner with a. depending bracket 2V, and these brackets are connected in longitudinal pairs by a U-shaped guide 2G which normally lies in a substantially horizontal plane projecting outward from the platform, being held in this position by flexible supports 27.
The height of the structure 26 is substantially equal to the distance at which the pivotal point of the structure is placed below the platform 11, so that, when the structure 2G is swung upward, its base will lie substantially even with the top of the platform. Each end 13 is provided with two sets of hooks or hangers 28 adapted to receive and support the detachable side bars 29.
The operation is as follows: The parts are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, and the structure 14-15 inclined away from the open side of the vehicle. A suitable shock grapple 30 is then placed about a shock 31 and the lifting cable 1S attached thereto. As the cable is pulled the shock will be first drawn over against the adjacent U-shaped guide 2G, and, as the shock is lifted, said guide will swing upward therewith so as to assist in the delivery of the shock to the platform. The downward pull upon the cable between pulleys 2O and 21 serves to hold the structure 14-15 in position. The shocks which are lifted first are packed tightly against the siderails 29, and carriage 17 is shifted along the bar 15 to bring the carriage opposite the point at which the next shock is to be deposited, said carriage being held in position by means of a pawl 17 entering notches 15 formed in the lower side of the bar 15.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a portable platform, a swinging structure mounted thereon to swing on a substantially horizontal aX'is and consisting in part of a longitudinal beam, means for holding said structure upon either side of the vertical, and lifting mechanism supported on said beam and having lifting action independent of the movement of the said swinging structure.
2. The combination of a portable platform, a substantially inverted U-shaped structure, means for supporting said structure on the platform with the longitudinal beam thereof upon either side of a medial line of the platform, and lifting mechanism supported on said longitudinal beam.
3. The combination of a portable platform, a swinging structure mounted thereon to swing on a substantially horizontall axis and consisting in part of a longitudinal beam, means for holding said structure upon either side of the vertical, lifting mechanism supported on said beam and having lifting action independent of the movement of the said swinging structure, end walls arranged at each end of the platform, detachable side rails, and means for supporting said rails at either side of the vehicle.
4c. The combination of a portable platform, a substantially inverted U-shaped structure, means for supporting said structure on the platform with the longitudinal beam thereof upon either side of a medial line of the platform, lifting mechanism supported on said longitudinal beam, end walls arranged at each end of the platform, detachable side rails, and means for supporting said rails at either side of the vehicle.
5. The combination of a portable platform, a swinging structure mounted thereon to swing on a substantially horizontal axis and consisting in part of a longitudinal beam, means for holding said structure upon either side of the vertical, lifting mechanism supported on said beam, and guide rails arranged at each side of the platform below the level thereof and pivotally supported to project from the platform.
G. The combination of a portable platform, a substantially inverted U-shaped structure, means for supporting said structure on the platform with the longitudinal beam thereof upon either side of a medial line of the platform, lifting mechanism supported on said longitudinal beam, and guide rails arranged at each side of the platform below the level thereof and pivotally supported to project from the platform.
7. The combination of a portable platform, a swinging structure mounted thereon to swing on a substantially horizontal axis and consisting in part of a longitudinal beam, means for holding said structure upon either side of the vertical, lifting mechanism supported on said beam, end walls arranged at each end of the platform, detachable side rails, means for supporting said rails at either side of the vehicle, and guide rails arranged at each side of the platform below the level thereof and pivotally supported to project from the platform.

The combination of a portable platform, a substantially inverted U-shaped structure, means for supporting said structure on the platform with the longitudinal beam thereof upon either side of a medial line of the platform, lifting mechanism supported on said longitudinal beam, end walls arranged at each end of the platform, detachable side rails, means for supporting said rails at either side of the vehicle, and
guide rails arranged at each side of the platform below the level thereof and pivotally supported to project from the platform.
9. The combination of, a portable platform, a longitudinal guide rail, and arms supporting said guide rail and pivoted to the platform below the level thereof, for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination of a portable platform, a longitudinal beam, means for supporting said beam continuously longitudinally above the platform upon either side of the middle of said platform, and lifting mechanism carried by said beam.
11. The combination of a portable platform, a longitudinal beam, means for supporting said beam above the platform upon either side of the middle of said platform, lifting mechanism carried by said beam, and means for holding said lifting mechanism at various points along the length of said beam.
12. The combination of a portable platform, a pair of upwardly extending arms pivotally mounted at the opposite ends of said platform at their lower ends, means for limiting the possible swing of said arms to opposite sides of the medial plane of the platform, a longitudinal beam carried by the upper ends of said upwardly extending members and connecting the same, a cable carrier mounted on said beam and longitudinally movable along the same, means for holding said cable at various points on the beam, and a lifting cable carried by said carrier.
13. The combination of a portable platform, a longitudinal beam, means for supporting said longitudinal beam above the vehicle, upon either side of the longitudinal middle of the platform, a cable carrier mounted on said beam, means for holding said cable carrier at various points on the beam, and a. lifting cable carried by said carrier.
14. The combination of a portable platform, a swinging structure comprising a longitudinal beam arranged above the platform, means for supporting said structure upon either side of the vertical, a cable carrier mounted on said beam and a lifting cable carried by said carrier, one end of said lifting cable extending from the carrier through a suitable guide on the platform.
15.
