TYPE-WRITER DESK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,601, dated June 1,18'97.

Application filed October 5, 1896.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUs F. MEISSNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Desks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The present invention relates to a certain new and useful type-writing desk, and more especially to the mechanism for throwing the type-writing machine in or out of sight; and it consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.

The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive attachment mechanism for raising and lowering the type-writing machine in order to throw the same in and out of sight, which mechanism shall be so constructed and arranged that very little power shall be required to raise or lowerthe machine in order that the operator will not have to handle the full weight of the machine.

In order fully to comprehend the invention, reference must be had tothe accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a typewriter desk, showing the mechanism for raising and lowering the machine in an open position or the position assumedv when the machine is exposed to View. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional end view of the desk, taken on the medial transverse line of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the position of the parts when closed to hide from view or cover the machine.

In the drawings the letter A is used to indicate the desk, which is provided or made with the central open portion A. NVithin the central open portion, between the sides A2, is fitted and works the sliding platform B, upon which platform is secured in any suitable manner the type-writing machine. The ears a, depending from the under face of the platform, near its inner end, are secured by pins a' to the lower en d of the main levers B. inner edge of the lock-rail C, which raill is secured to the sides A2. The platform B rides upon the rolls b2 as moved in or out within the central opening of the desk.

To each side A2 is secured or fastened a guide rail or plate C', against the under edge of which the upper face of the platform B rests when the platform is moved outward to exposethe type-writing machine, Figs. l and and 2, the platform then resting between the guide-rails and the rolls b2.

The cover B2 is provided with a front C2, which when the cover is thrown upward rests upon the lock-rail C. This front has attached thereto a lock which engages with that of the lock-rail. To the front is also secured the handle C2, by means of which the cover is moved back and forth. In order to steady the cover as thrown back and forth, connection is made through the medium of the arm D between the said cover and the guide-rail C', Figs. 2 and 3. For the purpose of closing the opening which would exist between the back plate B3 and the front C2 of the cover when the platform B is moved outward I secure to the back plate B2 the right-angularlyextending piece or flange D.

To the forward edge of the central cut-away portion of the desk-top is attached the strip D2. This strip covers the joint between the inner end of the cover and the edge of the desk and at the same time answers as a stop to prevent the pens or pencils rolling off the desk.

When the parts stand in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, being closed, the type-writing machine, resting upon the platform B, will be covered or hidden from view. To throw the machine into view for use, the operator takes hold of the handle CS and by slightly lifting thereon raises the cover B2. As the IOO cover is raised its inner end Will move downward or disappear Within the central opening 0f the desk, and the main levers turning upon their fulcrumed point the platform, with the typeWriting machine attached thereto, Will gradually move outward and upward until it assumes the position illustrated by Figs. l and 2, which is an open position. The type- Writing machine will then be exposed and in position for use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is-

The improved type-Writer cabinet herein described and shown consisting of a desk having a central opening, guide-rails secured on the side Walls of said opening at the top of the same, a lock-rail in front of said opening, rollers mounted on the lock-rail, a platform sliding between said rollers and the lower edges of the guide-rails, said platform being provided With a back plate near its rear end and a rearward extension or shelf extending from said back plate, a cover resting on the upper edges of the guide-rails, a front plate secured to said cover and adapted to engage the loclorail, levers fulcrumed on the side Walls of the central opening in the desk and having their opposite ends pivoted respectively to the platform and the cover and links having their opposite ends pivoted respectively to the cover and the guide-rails.
