SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 767,388, dated August 16, 1904.

Be it known that I, MIcHAEL GIRIeLIANo, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Ladder and Platform, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to those ladders which are intended for use at fires and which are mounted on and adapted to be raised from trucks; and the object of my invention is to provide such ladder with a platform near the top and means of operating such platform from the base of the ladder or when necessary from the base of another ladder, above which the platform-ladder can be extended and with which it is connected.
In the accompanying drawings similar characters show corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the platform lowered upon the ladder and the means of operating the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the platform raised. Figs. 3 and L are side elevations showing, respectively, the lowered and the raised platform upon the ladder and the means by which the platform is operated when such ladder is extended above a lower ladder. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section, and Fig. 6 a detail sectional plan view, of certain of the parts which adjust and hold the platform in position.
My improved device is constructed as follows: Near the top of the rails 1 are placed hinges 11, on which swings the platform 10. Braces 9, having hinged ends 13 and 12, connect the front portion of the platform with the parts 6 and 7, through which pass the rods 2 and 4, respectively. The rod a is fastened to the rail 1; but the rod 2 is movable through the guides 14, which are attached to the corresponding side rail. A set-screw 8 or other similar means fastens the rod 2 to the supportingpiece 6; but the supporting-piece 7 slides on the fixed rod I. The lower'portion 3 of the rod 2 is provided with a rack which meshes with a gear 5.
The platform is raised or lowered by operating the gear 5, which, meshing with the rack 3, raises or lowers the rod 2, which by the setscrew 8 is fastened to the supporting-piece 6,

thereby carrying up' or bringing down the hinged braces 9 and the platform 10. WVhen raised to its proper position, the platform 10 is there sustained by means of the device shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6.
The inner face of that portion of each of the supporting-pieces 6 and 7 which is adjacent to the front of the rails is provided with notches 19, and a pin or stop 15 engages with the notches, being held therein by a spring 16 at the opposite face of the rail, and thereby supports in proper position the parts 6 and 7. The friction and pressure caused by the hearing of the platform through the braces 9 upon the parts 6 and 7 and upon the rods 2 and 4 when the ladder is in an upright position also tend to keep the parts 6 and 7 at the proper point of support for the platform.
The release of the platform by the withdrawal of the pins 15 from the notch of the cogged pieces 6 and 7 is effected by pulling down upon a rope 17, which being attached to the back of the pin 15 passes down through the rail over a wheel 18 inserted therein.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown the means of raising the platform and its ladder, in connection with a lower ladder 24, to which it is slidably attached. One of the rails of such lower ladder 2% is provided with sprocket-wheels 2O 21, over which passes an endless chain 26. To the rod 2 is fastened by a set-screw or other suflicient means the sleeve 22, upon which is a stud 23, which is connected with a link of the chain 26. The movement of the chain over the sprocket-wheels raises or lowers the rod 2 and the platform simultaneously with the platform-ladder.
The usual guy-ropes or braces are to be used in connection with the ladder herein shown, which, as stated, is especially intended for use with fire-trucks, but may be employed wherever a combined ladder and platform are required.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a ladder, an adjustable platform having supporting braces, cogged pieces mounted to slide on the rails of the ladder and hinged to the platform and braces, guides upon one of the rails, a rod movable through such guides and having its lower portion racked, a gear-wheel which meshes with said rack, means of fastening the movable rod to the cogged piece, stops engaging with the cogged pieces, springs for said stops, and means for withdrawing the stops from the cogged pieces, substantially as shown and described.
