PORTABLE PLATFORM.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that 1, JOHN WILLIAM RICE, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Tregenna Cottage, Oatlands Park, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented anew and useful Improved Portable Platform, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved portable platform for the use of painters, housedecorators, window cleaners, and others whose work is situated on the outside of a window, or thereabout, and has for its objects to enable the same to be easily trans ported, fitted, and removed from a windowcasement and enable workmen to execute their Work with a minimum of risk.

To enable this invention to be clearly understood, reference is made to the appended sheets of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved portable platform, illustrating the same attached to a window-casement. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1 with reference to the platform. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow 0. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the improved platform collapsed ready for transport.

A platform 1 of greater width one end than the opposite end has its narrower portion provided with slots 2 to enable bolts 3, with flynuts 4, to pass therethrough and be connected by a strap 5 above the platform 1 and below by a bar 6, to which are fixed two depending rods? for carrying a cross-bar 8, that may or may not be provided with india-rubber or other suitable facing and which can be fixed on any suitable part of the said rods 7 by means of a screw or the like 9. At or near the end of the said narrow portion is hinged or otherwise attached an adjustable leg 10, consisting of a rod sliding within a tube or similar means, the adjustment thereof being regulated by a screw or the like 11. To the opposite end of the platform 1, where the width is greatest, is hinged a vertical support 12, that has hinged thereto a supplementary platform 13, provided with depending legs or uprights 14, which when in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 fit into recesses formed in the upper surface of the platform 1. The front edge of the supplementary platform 13 is fitted with a sliding catch 15, which enables it when folded or turned up to be retained in a vertical position by engaging with a hole 16, formed in one of a pair of uprights 17, fixed to the sides of the vertical support 12. These uprights 17 are connected, by means of links or bars 18, that are provided with rule or other joints, to similar uprights 19 in such a manner that the said bars 18 are pivotally attached to the outside and inside of the uprights 17 and uprights 19, respectively, while the latter are removably connected to the sides of the platform 1 within bands 20 by means of split pins or other devices 21, fitting into holes formed therein. To the said bands are loosely attached by countersunk screws adjustable catches 22, which are held in a horizontal position, as in Fig. 4, by one of the adjustment-holes in each of the catches bearing onto the head of the screw 28. On the under surface of the platform 1 and hinged to the end of greater width is astrut 24, that may or may not be provided with an indiarubber or other cushion 25 at its end, while rods or chains 26 limit its amount of play.

The operation of this invention is as follows: Let the improved platform be folded up, as shown in Fig. 4, and then by releasing the catches 22 and removing and replacing the cross-bar 8 to allow the adjustable leg 10 to be released the platform can be partially projected out of the lower portion of the open window casement sufiiciently to allow the strut24 to drop. Then by pulling the platform in slightly the end of said strut 24 is brought to bear against the outside of the wall 27 and the catches 22 under the window-sill 28 and can be rigidly fixed by adjusting. the crossbar 8 so that the same shall take up its position underneath the window-ledge 29. i The rigidity of the platform is further increased by adjusting the sliding leg 11 so that the foot thereof shall bear on the floor of the room. WVhen the platform is fixed, as hereinbefore described, the uprights 17 and 19 can be raised, as they are of such a length as to clear the bottom edge of the lower window-frame when fully opened, and the uprights 19 fixed within the band 20 by means of the split pins 21, while the supplementary platform 13 can be fixed in the horizontal position by releasing the catch 15 and fitting the uprights 14 into their recesses in the platform 1, if desired.

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved portable platform consisting of the combination of a slotted platform, depending rods, adjustable cross-bar, hinged strut, supplementary platform hinged to avertical support fixed between uprights, leg-supports for same when in a horizontal position, sliding catch for retaining said supplementary platform in vertical position between uprights When not in use, and uprights connected to each other by hinged side bars and to slotted platform by vertical hinged piece and removable split pin.

2. An improved portable platform consisting of the combination of a slotted platform, depending rods attached to the said platform, cross-bar adjustably fitted to the depending rods, strut hinged to and connected by chains to the platform, uprights with hinged sidebar connections, attached by vertical hinged piece and split pins to said platform, adjustable catches and stop for holding same in horizontal position, hinged supplementary platform provided With leg supports and catch, and adjustable leg-support hinged to slotted end of platform as herein set forth.
