ALBERT O. MOKENDREE, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN M. GLAZIER, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE=PLATFORM LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,245, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed January 17,1891. Serial No. 378,175. (No modelil full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements in adjustable platform ladders hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a perspective view of my improved adj ustable-platform ladder.
In the construction of my invention shown, A A is a sectional ladder removably connected together by means of a short intermediate section B. In the lower end of the section A is a removable base B, adapted to be utilized in the lower section A in slots a a, as shown, or in like slots (1 a in the upper section A, as a base for the upper section A when lower section A is removed therefrom. On the upper ends I) of the sides of the upper section are blocks 0 (J, adjustably secured thereto by means of bolts 0, passing through holes 0', so that they can be adjusted up and down on the ladder,- as desired, and to these blocks 0 O are hinged laterally-adj ustable arms D D, provided with adjustable braces D D and adapted to project against the side of a building and support the ladder in an upright position, or to be folded down against the side of the ladder when desired.
On the ladder A, I place a vertically-traveling frame E, constructed, preferably, of crosspieces 6 c on the outer sides of the ladder and vertical pieces F F on the edges ofthe sides of the ladder, which parts are secured together by cross-braces ff, so that the frame E will slide freely up and down on the side bars of the ladder. To the bottom cross-pieces e e of the frame E, I secure a platform H, by means of hinges h, so that it can be folded up against the ladder when desired.
On the insides of the upper ends I) b of the ladder I secure pulleys l I, and in the proj ecting ends of the upper cross-pieces e e of the frame E, I mount a crank-shaft J, having spools J J on the ends thereof, and a hook L, hinged to the crank portion M thereof and adapted to engage with the rounds in of the ladder. To the spools J J, I secure the ends of acontinuous rope N, which passes up over the pulleys I I and down under the platform H, notches n being provided in the edges of the platform to retain the ropeN in place, so that by turning the shaft J, by means of the crankM therein,the operator, while standing thereon, can raise or lower the platform, as desired. On one of the cross-pieces e of the frame E, I also preferablypivot a horizontally-swinging shelf 0, adapted to support a paint-pot P or other article desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. The combination, in an adj ustable-plat form ladder, of an upright ladder having pulleys on the upper end thereof and horizontally and vertically folding braces hinged to the top of said ladder, with a frame adapted to slide up and down on said ladder, a platform hinged to said sliding frame, a crankshaft mounted in said sliding frame, and an endless rope having the ends thereof secured to and extending from spools on said crankshaft up over the pulleys at the top of the ladder and down to and under said hinged platform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in an adj ustable-platform ladder, of a ladder consisting of sections, as A A, with a frame, as E, adapted to move up and down on both of said sections, and a platform, as H, hinged to said sliding frame and adapted to be folded up against said frame when not in use, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in an adjustable-platform ladder, of blocks 0 O, pivoted to the upper ends b of the sides of the upper sections A of the ladder, and longitudinally-slotted arms D D, pivoted to said blocks 0 C, so as to IOC swing horizontally thereon, with braces D D, having their inner ends pivoted to the inner ends of the arms D D and their outer ends engaging with the slots in said arms D D by means of thumb-screws, whereby the outer ends of the arms D D may be adjusted laterally, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
at. The combination, in an adj ustable-platform ladder, of a ladder consisting of sections, as A A, a frame, as E, adapted to slide up and down on both of said sections, a platform, as H, hinged to and adapted to fold up against said frame E, with adjustable arms, as D D, and braces D D thereon, pivoted to blocks, as O C, on the upper ends I) b of the ALBERT C. MCKENDREE.
