UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F RIOHMOND, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
lRONlNG-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,561, dated December 4, 1881,
' Application filed June 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ironing-tables; and it consists in certain improvements in adjustable tables, as hereinafter. shown, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of an ironing-table having my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the table. Fig. 4. is a side view, showing the table closed. Fig. 51's a plan View of the closed table inverted.
A designates the top of the table, forming the ironing-board, which is hinged at one end to the frame, this being usually effected by fastening the end of the board to a cross-bar, a, which has bearings in apertures in the inclinedbars B and G, the parts having pivotal connection. The other end of the board A rests on a cross-bar, b, which is fixed to the ends of the inner inclined bars, B, a pin, 0, on bar b entering an aperture inthe' board A. The lower ends of the two bars 0 are pivoted at d to the bars B, which, with the bars B, form the main supporting parts of the frame. The two bars 0, near the opposite end of the frame, have their upper ends pivoted to the inner bars, B, and their lower ends pivoted at e to the outer bars, B, as shown, the pivotal connections of parts being intended to al low the closing of the frame, as hereinafter set forth. The cross-strips f and 9 connect corre sponding parts in opposite sides of the frame, and form braces to strengthen it.
D indicates two short bars or connectingpieces, one being located at each side of the frame, and having one end pivoted at s to an outer bar, B. The other end is fastened to one end of a rod, h, extending across the frame,
and passing through the slots 7; in the inner bars, B. One or more notches, a, in each slot are intended as rests for the rod h, when the I table is adjusted for use, (see Fig. 2,) aspring, m, on each bar B serving to retain the rod in place, and thus hold the parts in position as desired. A notched guard-plate, 0, fixed in each bar B, prevents wearing of the notches by the rod 71..
The operation of opening or closing the frame is very simple. In opening and adjusting it for use, the board A is raised on its hinges, and the frame is spread by handling the cross-bars a and Z). The rod h moves along in the slots 2' under the yielding springs m, and rests in two notches, a, where it is retained by the springs, and the board A is left with its forward end resting 011 cross-bar b, the pin 0 entering a hole, 12, in the board. In closing the table, the board A is lifted from bar I), and the upper extremities of bars B and B pressed downward, the springs yielding to the pressure caused by the pieces 1) drawing the rod h, and the several parts of the table are brought together in the form shown in Figs. 4. and 5, and may be secured by turning the button 2' over rod h, and the table thus closed may be conveniently laid away or hung up or packed for transportation.
I claim- 1. An adjustable table having supportingbars B, with pivoted pieces D, holdingaerossrod, h, in combination with slotted supporting-bars B, connecting-bars G and O, and a top board hinged to two of the supporting,
bars, the parts being constructed substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. An adjustable table having a hinged board, A, supported substantially as shown, the main bars, B, hinged to the table-top, bars B, provided with notched slots i, and connecting-bars O and O, in combination with the pieces D, pivoted to frame B, rod it, mounted on said pieces and passing through slots 2', and the retaining springs, substantially as set forth. v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. RICHMOND.
