IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 140,874, dated July 15, 1873; application filed I May 9, 1873.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BENNOR, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Extension -Tables for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the combination of hooks and eyes and a jointed arm and hook with the cover and top of a sewing-machine table, for connecting the two parts together, the arm and hook being so constructed that they may be folded up out of the way, within the cover, when the latter is not in use, as hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the table provided with perforated brackets E E, the cover B being in position on the top of the table. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cover B in connection with one end of the table-top, the lid of the till 0 being thrown open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the cover, showing the hinged arm I folded up out of the way. Fig. 4 is an isometrical view of the arm I and hook J. Fig. 5 is a like view of the bracket K.

A is the table-top, and B the cover, which is provided with a till, 0. D is the upper portion of one end of the frame, to which the the till 0 is hinged. The grooves in the upperside of the brackets are'for the purpose of making an easy connection of the hooks. For the purpose of. locking the cover'B firmly in position, with its top level with the table-top A, there is an arm, I, having a hook, J, which rests on the part f of the frame of the table, the inner end of the arm being hinged to the bracket K, which is fastened by means of screws to the inner face of the "vertical side 9 of the cover, as seen in Fig. 2. The arm I and extension hook J, as shown in detail in Fig. 4, are connected by means of the slot h and screw L, for the adjustment of the hook to bring to top of the cover B level with the top of the table. The arm is held in the position it assumes in Fig. 2 when turned down to connect the cover with the table by means of the spring M on the rod N,-which'.connects it with the bracket K, and the V-shaped stop 3' of the arm connecting with the corresponding groove k of the bracket, seen'in Fig. 5. When the arm-is thrown up within the cover it is held, securely by the stop engaging with the groove 70.
By means of the devices above described the cover may be instantaneously connected with the table-top to form an extension of the table, or for its removal therefrom. The molding 1 on the front and ends of the cover B is made to correspond with the molding on the table-top; but the molding l on the rear side is reversed to fit into the molding on the end of the table-top, to make a steady connection and finish therewith.
I I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the hinged arm I, having a hook, J, bracket K, and spring M, with the frame D and cover B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the extension-hook pose set forth.
