UNr'TEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' SHEPHERD W. STEVES, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DINING AND LAUNDRY TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,294, dated April 9, 1878 application filed March 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, SHEPHERD W. SrEvEs, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol, and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Dining and'Laundry Tables; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my table, with its hinged leaves dropped so as to occupy least horizontal space. Fig. 2 is a like view of said table as arranged for use in ironing clothes. Fig. 3 is avertical central crosssection, and Fig. 4. is a vertical central section of the same upon a longitudinal line.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to combine in a compact and convenient form a servants dining-table and .an ironingtable; to which end it consists, principally, in the peculiar construction of the table-top and its combination with the bed of the table, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in the combination of the ironing-board with the bed of the table, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, finally, in the device as a whole, its several parts being constructed and combined to operate in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, A and A represent the vertical posts or legs of my table, which are secured together near their lower ends by means of horizontal rails B, and near their upper ends by two horizontal end rails, O, that extend between each pair of said legs, and two side rails, D, which extend in a downward curve between the corresponding legs at each side, the whole forming the frame or bed of my table. Resting upon the upper ends of the legs A is a top, E, which has preferably an oval form in plan view, with the longest axis of the same arranged transversely, and has its ends E, which project beyond the sides of the bed, hinged so as to enable them to be turned downward when-not in use, as shown in Fig. 1.
When said leaves E are turned upward to a horizontal position they are supported by means of slides F, that are drawn from a pocket, Gr, outward beneath the same.
. The construction shown enables the table to be used'for dining purposes; but when required for use in ironing clothes, the top E must be turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, for which purpose said top is hinged to or upon the upper ends of the legs A of one side, as shown in said figure. WVhen turned downward to its normal position, said top E is secured to or upon the upper ends of the opposite legs by means of one or more hooks, H, or other similar devices.
As the length of the top E would render it inconvenient to have the same turned upward. against a wall, an extra piece, E, connected by a hinge-joint, is provided just inside of the point where the front leaf E joins the central part, which joint is arranged so as to permit the portion outside to be folded upward and inward against the upper face of said top, by which means the latter has much less height when raised to a vertical position than would otherwise be the case.
Swiveled vertically within the upper side, at the center of one of the end rails O, is a metal stud, I, which has hinged to its upper end the vertical arm of a T-shaped metal bar, K, the horizontal arm of which latter is secured to or upon the large end of an ironingboard, L, of usual form, the arrangement be-.
ing such as to enable said board to rest horizontally upon the cross-rails O, and to be raised to a vertical position, where it may be turned with said stud I, so as to cause either of its faces to be uppermost when again turned downward. At its large end the board L is held in horizontal position by means of its pivotal bearin g I and K, while at its opposite end the same result is produced by means of a stud, M, which projects from the rail 0 upward into a recess, 1, provided in said board.
At each end of the bed or frame is hinged a shelf, N, which may be dropped downward 'to the position shown in Fig. 1, or may be said leaf, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4;. If desired, the said bracket may be rigidly attached to its support, and the latter pivoted so as to turn upon a vertical axis.
One of the shelves N is provided with a metal spider, n, for supporting sad-irons, while the opposite shelf may be used'for the support of water or starch vessels.
Between the lower rails B is provided a shelf, B, and beneath the same are two drawers, Q, for table-linen.
The table thus constructed is convenient and compact, and combines all of the essential features of two heretofore distinct and separate tables.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s 1. In combination with thebed or frame of the table, the top E, provided with the hinge-joint piece E, and hinged near one end to or upon said bed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the rails C of the bed, the swiveled stud I, hinged bar K, and reversible ironing-board L, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. The hereinbefore-described table, in which the top E E E, slides F, hook H, swiveled stud I, hinged bar K, ironing-board L, stud M, shelves N, brackets O, and drawers Q are constructed and combined with each other and with the frame or bed, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1878.
