DAVID SHULER, OF NEIV DOVER, OHIO.
DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,014, dated June 214:, 1884.
Application filed October 23, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID SHULER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Dover, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful IVall Table and Desk, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to supports for folding leaves; and it has for its object toprovide a device which shall possess superior advan tages in point of simplicity, durability, and general. efficiency.
To this end my invention consists in certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, illustrating the construction of the device. Fig. L is a detached front view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the swinging latch.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates a folding leaf, which is suitably hinged to a bracket, B, secured in any convenient manner to the wall of a room. An upright, O, is provided, which serves to support the bracket B, and to which the means for supporting the folding leaf are attached, as will now be more fully described,
Secured to the under side of the leaf A is a rail, D, having a recess, E, over which is se cured a plate, ,F, havingalongitudinal slot, G.-
H is an arm or support hinged to the upright 0, and having a hinged extension, I, which is provided at its upper end with a laterally-extending pin or plug, J, extending through the slotted plate F, and having ahead, K, which prevents its being withdrawn from the said slot.
L designates a latch pivoted to the under side of the rail 1), and extending into the recess E of the latter, into which it is forced by the action of a spring, M, arranged under the outer end of the said latch. The latch L may be provided with one or more notches, N,
(No model.)
adapted to receive the laterally-projecting pin J of the support H ,I, thus regulating the extension of the latter and the inclination of the leaf A when the latter is raised.
O designates a latch pivoted at its rear end to the under side of the rail D, and provided with a projection, O, extending outwardly from one side, said projection being adapted to engage with a notch in the upper part of the hinged extension I of the support H, thus preventing the latter from being folded. By swinging the latch outward the projection O is disengaged with the notch, so that the hinged support may be folded, in the manner and for the purpose "ivell known. The main supporting'bracket B is provided with shelves P I, adapted to support a lamp and other articles which it may be deemed desirable and convenient to have close at hand when the desk is in use.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. It is simple and convenient, easily attached to the wall of any room where its use may be desired, and it may in a moments time be adjusted so as to form a convenient reading or writing desk, or a table, as occasion may require.
I claim as my invention and desire to se cure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in leaf-supports, the combination, with the wall-bracket, of the hinged drop-leaf, a support for the same constructed of two hinged sections, a rail, D, under the drop-leaf, provided with a recess, E, a pin extending laterally from the upper supportingsection I, into the recess, a spring latch, L, engaging with the said pin, and a hinged latch, O, engaging the upper supporting-section, so as to prevent the support from folding, as set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID SHULER.
