J OHN J. WHEAT, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE TABLES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136.798, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JOHN J .WHEAT, ofWheeling, in the county of Ohio and in the State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebein ghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a sewing-machine table with a sliding top, constructed as hereinafter described, so that the machine can be dropped down below'the table and the top moved over the aperture to cover the same, and thus form a table for any other purpose that may be desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, .a transverse vertical section; Fig. 3, a side view;
. and Fig. 4, a longitudinal vertical section of my invention.
A represents the frame of a sewing-machine table, provided with a top, B, which is made to slide endwise for a suitable distance. In
the frame A are two slots, to a, with two screws or headed pins, 1) b, passing from the under side through said slots into the top. In the center of the top B, on the under side, is a longitudinal groove, d, and into the same projects a pin, 0, from the upper side of the frame. By these means the sliding top B is guided perfectly straight in its movement back and forth. In the main frame A is hinged a smallor frame, 0, upon which the machine is to be firmly secured. This frame 0 may be hinged either at the front or rear edge, as may be deemed most convenient, and is to swing open downward so as to drop the machine below the table when not in use. When thrown up so as to use the machine the frame 0 is held by any suitable lock or catch, D. To the under side of the main frame A is secured a curved metallic guard or protector, E, within which the outer side of the hinged frame 0 moves when the machine is thrown down under the table.
When the machine is to be used the sliding top B is moved out, forming an extension, which is held perfectly firm by the means above described; and when the machine is not in use the top is moved inward, when it forms a table that may be used for any purpose desired. p
The sliding top B may be cut out at the in ner end, as shown, leaving, when the top is drawn out, a portion projecting in frontand rear of the hinged frame 0, and thus increase the bearing-surface of the top on the frame A.
That part of the top B which is cut out is attached on the frame A, as shown at G in Fig. 1.
The various parts of my sewingmachine table may be made of any suitable material and of any desired form. The shape or-form of the hinged frame 0 must necessarily depend on the kind of machine intended to be used with the table.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a stationary sewing-machine table, recessed to allow the machine to drop below, the sliding top B, con-' structed and operating substantially as set forth.
2. The sliding top B, combined with the frame 0, when hinged to the'mainframe in such a manner that it will drop beneath and be covered by said sliding top, as set forth.
3. The shield E connected to the underside of the frame A, which, with the sliding top, protects the mechanism when the hinged frame is dropped beneath the main frame, as is herein "set forth.
4. The combination of the frame A, sliding top B, hinged frame 0, and shield E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 187 3.
J OHN J. VVHE'AT.
