SPECZFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,907, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filed April '7, 1903. Serial No. 151,481. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PAUL A. RASMUSSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beresford, in the county of Union and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing-boards of that class designed to be removably engaged with a table-top or other suitable support, an object being to provide an ironing-board of simple and inexpensive construction that may be quickly attached to a table or other support and as readily (letached therefrom and that may be adjusted to supports of different heights.
I will describe an ironing-board embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ironing-board embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an ironing-board having an outwardly-opening slot 2 at its end designed to engage the under side of a table-top or the like. Secured to the under side of the board is a cleat 3, which is also provided with a notch, and the end wall of the notch is inclined downward and forward, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A supporting-leg 4 has its upper portion extended through this slot, and a projected end of said leg is designed to engage with the upper side of the table-top or other support therefor, the inner end of the board and the said upper end of the leg forming clamping-jaws for en- Adjustable along the upper side of the leg and below the board is a bearing-block 5, on which the lower side of the board or the cleat 8 is designed to rest when the board is in position for use. As here shown, this block 5 has a rib 6 on its under side, which engages in a slot 7, formed in the upper side of the leg. By this construction the block is prevented from lateral movement with relation to the leg. The upper side of the block is provided with a series of notches 8, in any one of which a loop 9 may be engaged. This loop 9 consists of Wire or other suitable material, and it has swinging connection with the leg. Extended along the upper side of the block is a spring plate or wire 10, designed to prevent the accidental displacement of the loop 9 from a notch. The lower end of this spring. is attached to the lower end of the block, as here shown, and its upper end is free; but obviously this arrangement may be reversed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
While the spring 10 by bearing on the loop will prevent its accidental movement from a notch, it is obvious that the loop may be readily swung upward by the fingers of a persons hand, which will cause an upward movement of the spring, and then the block may be moved downward to the desired position for adjusting the head of the board to the 'table or other support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An ironing-board having a slotted end, a downwardly and outwardly inclined leg having a portion extended through said slot, a bearing-block movable along the upper side of said leg and having a series of notches in its upper side, a loop mounted to swing on the leg and adapted to engage in any one of said notches, and a spring carried by the block for engaging with said loop.
2. An ironing-board having a slotted end, a leg having a portion extended through said slot, the said leg having a slot in its upper side, a block movable along the upper side of the leg and having a rib for engaging in said slot, the said block having a series of notches in its upper side, a loop having swinging connection with the leg and adapted to engage in any one of said notches, and a spring attached to the block,'and adapted to engage with said loop while said loop is in any one of the notches.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL A. RASMUSSEN.
