Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK H. MAYEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Palestine, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Board Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ironing boards, and comprises an attachment for the same which will support the article being ironed, thus preventing the free end thereof from coming in contact with the floor.

This invention also contemplates the provision of an attachment of this nature which may be supported on the under side of an ironing board at the same time having one extremity thereof free from the board in order that the skirts, shirts, and the like may be ironed.

The attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises an elongated basket detachably secured to the under side of an ironing board, and adapted to project outwardly from one side thereof. Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates an ironing board of the usual construction to which the attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention is secured. A plurality of attaching plates 11 are attached on the under side of said board, each of said plates being provided with a socket 12 at its rear terminal and a bracket 13 at the forward terminal thereof, said bracket being open on one side thereof and pierced by the set screw 14. Each of the attaching or securing brackets carried by the basket, as hereinafter more fully described, is secured to the bracket carried by the board, one terminal of said securing or attaching bracket being retained in the socket 12 while the intermediate portion thereof is swung into engagement with the bracket 13 and retained therein by the set screw 14.

The basket which is secured to the board 10 comprises a bottom 15 which is formed of two sections pivotally connected together, said sections being formed of transverse bars connected to the longitudinal bars 16, the outer edge of said bottom being elevated as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 6. The outer side 18 is pivotally connected to the ele-v vated edge 17 and is formed in two pivotally connected sections which are secured `together when the device is in its operative position by the spring catch 19. The side 17 of each section adjacent to the terminals thereof is provided with the recesses 2O in each of which is secured the spring catch membery The bottom is retained in the horizontal position when the device is in an operative position by the pivotally connected links 25 which are interposed between the side 23 and the bottom 15. The stationary section of the side 23 has a plurality of spaced brackets mounted thereon.

The stationary section of the side 23 has a plurality of spaced brackets pivotally mounted thereon. Each bracket comprises an angularly bent rod 26 pivotally mounted on the side 23 having an oblique brace 27 interposed between the horizontal portion 2G of the rod and the vertical portion which is pivotally mounted on the side 23. The free terminal of the horizontal portion 26 is retained in the socket 12 of the plate 11, while the portion of the horizontal section adjacent to the bend of the rod 26 is secured in the bracket 13 and retained therein by the setscrew 14.

The movable side 23 is retained in an elevated position through the instrumentality of a plunger 28 reciprocatingly mounted in the inner terminal of the upper bar thereof, said plunger' being actuated by the spring 29. This plunger is retained within the opening in the terminal of the bar through the instrumentality of a screw 30 located in a depression 31 formed on the upper surface of the bar, said screw projecting into a recess formed in the plunger. The side 23 is provided with a depression 32 which receives the plunger and which is provided with a lip 33 formed thereover which covers the depression 31 of the side 23, thereby forming a neat connection.

By having the brackets 26 pivotally connected to the basket, the latter may be easily yand quickly attached to the ironing board which would not be true if the brackets were rigidly carried by the basket for, if the latter were the case, it would require more than ordinary skill to attach the basket to Athe ironing board as the peculiar form of the attaching plates requires the necessary pivotal connection of the brackets with the basket. Furthermore, the pivotal connection of the brackets with the basket permits the latter to be positioned at an angle to or parallel with the edge of the ironing board, whereby the attachment is of a desirable nature as it is sometimes necessary to have the basket positioned at an angle to the edge of the ironing board, especially on the tapering style most commonly used nowadays. By having the brackets pivotally connected to the basket, the former may be folded against the sides of the basket for collapsing the lat-ter as illustrated in Fig. 5.

The catch member 28 carried by the section 23 is adapted to be depressed when coming into engagement with the section 23 and is forced outwardly by the spring into the recess 32, at which point the projection 33 entirely covers the screw 30 and tits in the depression 31, as above described.` The plunger 23 has its engaging point rounded so that any lateral force on the section 23 will result in depressing said plunger 28, as will readily be observed. `When the section 23 is in a horizontal position to permit the ironing of shirts, skirts or the like, said section performs the function of preventing the goods to be ironed from dragging on or touching the floor.

Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with an ironing board, of a series of brackets carried on the under side thereof, a basket adapted to project from one side of said ironing board, pivotally mounted brackets carried by said basket adapted to engage the brackets of said ironing board, and a pivotal section mounted on the basket adjacent to one terminal thereof adapted to be swung into and out of a vertical position for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination with an ironing board, of a series of brackets carried on the under side thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having a socket at one terminal thereof and a bearing at the opposite terminal thereof, a basket cooperating with said board, pivotally mounted brackets carried by said basket adapted to engage the brackets carried by the board, and a pivotal section mounted on the basket adjacent to one terminal thereof adapted to swing into and out of a vertical position for the purnoses herein set forth.

3. The combination with an ironing board, of a series of brackets carried on the under side thereof, each bracket comprising a plate having a socket at one terminal thereof and a bearing at the opposite terminal thereof, a basket cooperating with said board, pivotally mounted brackets carried by said basket adapted to engage 'the brackets carried by the board, a pivotal section mounted on the basket adjacent to one terminal thereof adapted to swing into and out of a vertical position and means whereby said pivotal section may be rigidly connected with the remainder of the basket.

t. In combination, an ironing board, a basket secured thereto comprising a bottom having an upturned edge, side sections pivotally mounted thereon, and means carried by said upturned edge adapted to retain said side sections in a vertical position, as set forth.

5. In combination, an ironing board, a basket secured thereto comprising a bott-om having an upturned edge, side sections pivotally mounted thereon, and spring means carried by said upturned edge adapted to retain said side sections in an operative position, as set Iorth.

6. In combination, an ironing board, a basket secured thereto comprising bottom sections pivotally secured together, side sections piVotaIiy carried by said bottom sections, and a catch member carried on the top edge of one of said side sections adapted to engage the other side section and thereby retain the basket in an operative position as set forth.

7. In combination, an ironing board, a basket secured thereto comprising bottom sections pivotally secured together, side sections pivotally carried by said bottom sections, and means carried on the top edge of one of said side sections adapted to engage the other side section and thereby retain the basket in an operative position as set forth. 8. In combination, an ironing board, a basket secured on one edge thereof, and a side section pivotally carried by said basket and adapted to be swung from a vertical to a horizontal plane, said section extending under said ironing board When in a. horizontal plane, for the purpose herein specified.
