IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-LEAF SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,182, dated April 22, 1873; application filed February 26, 1873.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE PAYZANT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Table-Leaf Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a table provided with my improved leaf-support, and showing the position of the parts oonsti tuting the support when the leaf is raised to a horizontal position; Fig. 2, a like view of the same when the leaf is hanging in a vertical position; and Fig. 3, an end view of the leaf and support when the leaf is in the position represented in Fig. 1.

The object of my invention is to improve the construction and operation of table-leaf supports; and to that end it consists in certain novel means employed for that purpose, and hereinafter particularly described and set forth.

In the drawing, A represents the table, and B its leaf. 0 is a brace rigidly attached, either to the table, as shown in Fig. 1, or to the leaf, as shown in Fig. 2. D is a support, pivoted either to the leaf, as shown in Fig. 1, or to the table, as shown in Fig. 2.

When the leaf is raised the support B is in contact with the end of the brace G, as shown in Fig. 1, and the leaf is thus supported. In

order to fold the leaf the support I) is pushed aside until it is released from its contact with the end of the brace O, and no resistance is then offered to the downward movement of the leaf. When the leaf is raised the attraction of gravitation acts on the support D, and it is again brought in contact with the end of the brace (J, and supports the leaf in a horizontal position until the support is again moved aside. In order to prevent the support D from swinging beyond the end of the brace 0 when the leaf is raised, Iprovide the end of the said brace with a shoulder, c, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In order that the support D may acquire snfficient momentum to swing opposite the end of the brace O with certainty, the support D, when attached to the leaf, should be folded against the leaf when the latter is folded, or against the table in case the support is attached thereto; in either case the support may be retained in its folded position, until the leaf is partly folded by means of the foot 0, which may be widened for that purpose. In order that the support D may be convenientl y reached I deem it preferable to arrange it on the leaf.- I also deem it preferable to gradually widen the arm 0 of the brace O, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the support D will be thereby folded against the leaf when the latter is folded.

B is a recess, which receives the end of the brace 0, so that the leaf may hang in a vertical position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A table-leaf support, consisting of the supporting-arm D and of the brace or bearing 0 provided with a laterally-inclined arm, 0, for the purpose of folding the arm D when the leaf is folded, substantially as specified.
