Be it known that I, GEBHARD Bonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
' Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of have invented certain new and Minnesota, f h h useful Improvements in Tables, the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hingedly supported tables, its object being to provide an improved form of releasable locking device for holdingthe table locked in raised position.
To this end the invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side view of a hingedly supported side-wall table fitted with my improvements and shown held in raised position' Fig. 2 is a detail view of an actuating bar for the lock mechanism; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view ofa locking bar for the supporting arms of the table top.
Referring specifically to the drawings, represents a supporting wall as the wall of a room, ice-box, etc., upon the outer face of which wall the table top 2 has hinge support 3. The outer free edge of the table 1s connected with the wall by the supporting arms 4 and 5, said arms having pivotal con-' nection 6, the upper end of the arm 4 having pivotal connection 7 with the underside of the outer free edge of the table top and the lower end of the arm 5 having similar connection 8 with the wall A at a point below the table top. The pivotal connection of the arms 4 and 5 is upon the outer sides of the arms to permit the arms being folded inwardly and prevent them being folded outwardly beyond the alining position shown in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of locking the arms 4 and 5 in the supporting position shown in Fig. 1,1 provide the rod 9 journaled in bearings 10 underneath the table top, said rod being formed with an ofiset center 11 and with laterally bent ends 12, the extremities of the ends 12 of the bar having slidable support 13 in longitudinal slots 14 in the arms 4. Two pairs of the arms 4 and 5 are provided supporting opposite sides of the table top. The actuating bai- 15 has support 16 underneath the table top, the
inner end of said bar being formed with a downwardly and forwardly extending loop 17 embracing the central ofiset portion 11 of the locking rod. The outer end of the bar 15 is formed with a handle portion 18.
In use, the operating parts function in the following manner. The lifting of the table top to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 will bring the arms 4 and 5 into the alining position shown with the locking bar 9 standing'in the dotted line position shown. By then pulling the actuating bar 15 outwardly the free ends of the locking 'rod will be turned forwardly pulling its free ends to the upper ends of the slot 14 to bring the rod past dead center position and form a brace, preventing the folding of the supporting arms. To release the locking rod the actuating bar will be pressed inwardly to turn the locking rod rearwardly and carry its ends 12 downwardly in the slots 14 past dead center, allowing the foldingof the arms 4 and 5, and the dropping of the table top to dotted line position. It thus is unnecessary for the operator to touch the supporting arms from a point underneath A the table either in the raising or lowering of the table top, thereby permitting a convenient and safe raising and lowering of the as well as affording a particularly table top effective locking mechanism.
I claim:
1. In combination with table top having hinge support at one edge upon said wall, foldable supporting arms pivotally'connecting the free edge of said table top with the wall at a point below said top, means for locking said arms in extended position consisting of a member having fulcrum support underneath the table top and .slidable connection with said supporting arms, hand actuatable means supported by the table top and operatively connected with said locking member for turning said locking member upon its fulcrum and sliding the locking end of said member along said arms into a position constituting a locking brace between the table top and arms, holding said arms from folding.
