BED-TABLE.
Application filed May 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern."
Be itknown that I, HinmrsoN A. Human, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby. in the county of Oceana, State of h'lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBedTables; andI do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed tables of the type to be used by persons confined to a bed for reading. writing, partaking of meals or other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a table of the type named which can be associated with beds of different widths. which has a wide range of adjustment, and which can be folded beneath the bed when not in use so as to be substantially out of sight.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bed of the type referred to which will be simple in construction and which can be manufactured at arelatively small cost.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse section through a bed showing the table applied and in opcrative position;
Fig. 2, a view table folded;
Fig. 3, a side view of what is shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5. a section through one of the pivoted standards with the parts in the position shown in Fig.
Fig. 6. a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 7, a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8, a view similar to Fig. 3 with the table top in an adjusted position.
similar to Fig. 1 with the Specification of Letters latent.
Patented July 3,1917. Serial No. 94,748.
Fig. 9,11 bottom plan view of the table top, and
Fig. 10, a perspective view ofthe upper section of one of the pivoted standards.
Referring to the drawings A and B indicate the side rails of bed which serve to directly support the bed table by connection of the latter with the usual ribs 10 and 11 disposed on the inner sides of the rails A and B respectively.
he improved bed table is shown as comprising a skeleton frame C with which is associated hangers 12 engaged over the rib 11. Slidably associated with the frame C is a bar 13 having a longitudinal slot ll through which is engaged a binding screw 15 carried by the frame C-and whereby the frame and bar 13 can be locked agz'iinst relative movement. The outer end of the bar 13 is provided with a transverse slot 16 in which is slidably engaged an extension 17 on a hanger 18, the latter directly engaging the rib 10 to complete the supporting structure of the frame C. Slidably mounted on the frame C for movement longitudinally of the latter is a carriage D which has secured to the bottom thereof a plate 19. Mounted on this plate 19 is a U-shaped bracket including arms 20 and 21 having curved edges 22 respectively provided with recesses 23 disposed relatively near the inner edges of the arms 20 and 21. Each of the arms 20 and 21 is embraced by the forked lower end of a tubular member 24. This member is pivotally connected to the related arm 20 or 21 bya pivot pin 25 fixed to the arm and engaged through elongated slots 26 in the furcations of the member 24. By making the slots 26 elongated it will be obvious that the tubular members 24: can be engaged in respective recesses 23 to lock said members in upright position. The free ends of the members 24 are also forked to form arms 27. Slidably engaged in the bore of each member 24: is a rod 28 and mounted on each memher is a collar 29 carrying a binding screw 30. When the collar 29 is disposed within the limits of the arms 27 it will be obvious that the screw 30 can be operated to clamp the arms on the rod 28 and thereby lock the related rod 28 against movement relatively to the member 24:. Pivotally mounted on the outer end of each rod 28 is a curved arm.-
31 having a longitudinal slot 32 forming parallel portions 33. Pivoted between reated portions 33 are the arms 34: of a U- shaped bracket 35. The arm connecting portion of the bracket 3-5 is provided with an arcuate slot 36 and pivoted on this arm con-' necting portion is a table top 37 carrying a binding screw 38 engaged through the slot 36 and whereby the tabletop may be locked in a desired pivotal adjustment with respect to the bracket 35.
When the table is set up in operative position the members 24 are engaged in respective recesses 23 and the rods 28 locked in the desired adjustment with respect to the members 24: in the manner previously referred to and the arms of the bracket have their edges engaged with the end walls of the slots 32. By raising one of the rods 28 higher than the other and by providing the pivoted arms 31 it will be obvious that the adjustment of the table top shown in Fig. 8 is rendered possible. By providing the adjustable bar 13 in connection with the frame C it is apparent that the device can'be readily associated with beds of different widths.
Pivoted on the under side of the plate 19 is a bracket 39 by which the table top is adapted to be supported when in folded position as shown in Fig. 2. In this position Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the parts the carriage D is moved longitudinally of the frame so as to dispose all the elements of the device beneath the bed.
What is claimed is 1. A bed table comprising a frame adapted to be secured transversely of a bed, a carriage movably mounted on the frame, a U-shaped bracket mounted on the carriage, tubular members loosely pivoted to the arms of said bracket respectively and adapted to be engaged in recesses in the edges of re spective arms of the bracket to securesaid members in upright position, and a table top carried by said members.
2. A bed table comprising a frame adapted to be secured transversely of a bed, a carriage movably mounted on the frame, tubular members pivoted to the carriage, rods adjustably mounted in said tubular members respectively, means for securing said tubular members in upright position, arms pivoted to the outer ends of said rods, a U-shaped bracket pivoted to said arms, and a table top pivoted to said bracket.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
