Patented Aug. 25,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB GREENEBAUM, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO GREENEBAUM BROTHERS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,473, dated August 25, 1874; application filed Y June 29, 1874. A
To allwhom Yt may concern:
Be it known that L'JAooB GREENEBAUM, of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented an Improvement in Overalls, of which the following is a specification:
The pockets and iiaps upon overalls are usually stitched upon the outside of the fabric composing the body of the overalls. Garments of this character are generally Worn by Workmen and subjected to very severe usage, and the angles of the pockets or ends ,of the iiaps often give Way and the lines of stitching break. The object of my invention is to strengthen the angles of the pockets and ends of the iiaps, straps, or other pieces that are attached to the overall or similar garmentsuch as an over-jacket. For this purpose I employ a re-enforcing lap that covers the end of the lap or angle ot' the pocket, and extends from the saine over and upon the surfacel of the body portion of the garment. Thereby the strain that comes upon `the edge of the pocket or flap is not taken alone upon the stitching at the angle, but a portion thereof-istaken by the re-enforce lap, and hence the angle or point of union of the two thicknesses of material is stronger and more durable.
In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the upper part of the front of the overalls, and Fig. 2 is a section at the line a: w.
The overalls are made of any desired fabric and in the usual manner, except as hereafter named. i
The ap c at the front is provided with buttons, the pocket b is stitched upon the outside ofthe fabric, and the pockets c c are inserted Within the overalls, the upper end openin g through the fabric. The re-enforcing laps i i are applied at the angles of the pockets and at the end of the ap, as represented.
This re-enforce lap isV made, by preference,
of a triangular form, and it is iirmly seWed to place. It is applied so as to lap upon the ap or pocket, and also to extend upon the surface of the single fabric. Thereby the angle will be strengthened, and the strain transferred from the stitching of the iap or pocket to the re-enforce lap.
I am aware that the angles of pockets have been strengthened, by metallic rivets., as in the patent of J. W. Davis, May 20, 1873, and such I do not claim but What I do claim as my inventionis- The overalls having the angles of the pockets and ap secured and strengthened by the re-enforce lap t' of textile fabric, extending across suoli angles at the points of juncture, and secured to both portions of the fabric of which the overalls are composed, substantially in thev manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 24th day of June, A. D. 1874.
JACOB GREENEBAUM.
Witnesses Gno. T. PINCKNEY, GHAs. H. SMITH.
