Description

Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
WILLIAM H. MITCHELL, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
TIE FASTENER.
Application filed May 14, 1924. Serial No. 713,197.
To (HZ "1117mm it'ma concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIADI H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tie Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tie fasteners.
An object of this invention is the provision of a tie fastener capable of holding a tie up against the fold of a collar.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a tie fastener for keeping a made-up tie in place.
A. further object of this invention is the provision of a tie fastener by which a tie may be held in place on collars of various heights.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, this invention consists in the construction and ar rangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a madeup tie positioned on a collar and secured to a collar button by the device of my invention which serves to hold the tie in place,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation of a made-up tie with the tie fastener of my invention afiixed to the tie, and
Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the tie fastener of my invention.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 7 indicates a device of my invention, which comprises a metal plate 8 folded at 9 and forming an outer section 10 and an inner section 11. which are bent to contact with each other. The outer plate 10 is bent outwardly medially forming a longitudinal outward roll 12 and an inner recess 13 which commune-ates with an aperture 13 adjacent the fold S), in which recess is positioned the lower portion of a-wire 141, the upper portion of which is bent downwardly at points 15, and at points 16 is bent to form horizontal portions 17 and is then bent upwardly forming a vertical loop 19.
The horizontal portions 17 are arcuate and are separated from each other by a distance allowing the passage of a head 20 of a collar button 21 therebetween. The dis tance between the sides of the loop 19 is such as to allowtheepassage therebetween of a neck 22 of the collar button 21, but is less than the width of the head 20 of the collar button, so that the head may not pass through the loop 19. A coiled spring 23 encircles the lower portion of the wire 14 and the lower end of the coiled spring 23 is secured to the corresponding end of the wlre 14. The aperture 13 is smaller than the diameter of the coiled spring 23, so that the latter may not pass upwardly through the aperture 13 The plate sections 10 and 11 are provided with apertures 25 so that these sections may be sewed to a tie 26 which is here shown as being of the made-up type and comprises a knot 27 from which extend wings 28. The device 7 of my invention is shown as sewed to the back of the knot 27 and in such position that when the upper edges of the wings 28 contact with the fold of the collar and the loop 19 engages the neck of the collar button, the wire 14 is pulled upwardly, by which the spring 23 is compressed.
It will thus be seen that the action of the spring 23 is such that the tie is kept pushed up against the fold of the collar and thus in the desired position.
It will also be understood that the device of my invention is such that a tie will be held in proper position with collars of various heights.
This invention has been described, but modifications thereof may be devised without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come within the scope of this invention.
hat is claimed is :i
1. A tie fastener comprising a folded plate, one of the sections of said plate being bent to form an inner recess, a member partially slidable into, and out of, said recess, a. coiled spring mounted on said member within said recess, said member being formed of a single piece of wire bent to form a horizontal portion adapted to pass the head of a collar button, and an upwardly extending vertical adapted to receive button.
2. A tie fastener comprising in combination a member having a recess therein and adapted to be secured to a tie, a stem member extending into said recess, a coil spring the neck of a collar ortion havin a slot llO secured to the end of said stem member and bearing against the inner end of the "recess, said stem member at its upper enctbeing formed of a single piece of Wire bent to form a horizontal portion adapted to pass the head of a collar button, and an upwardly extending Vertical portion having a slot adapted to receive the neck of acollar button.
3.'A tie fastener comprising a hollow member having a recess therein adapted to end of the stem member and abutting 1 against the inner upper end of-the recess, a Wire on the upper end of the stem member bent to form a loop to engage a single collar button.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specification.
