A. WEBER HAT ATTACHMENT Filed June 17, 1924 lullllullllllr llll.

UNITED STATES ALBERT a. WEBER, or MQL'ALLA, oREGoN.
HAT ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 17, '1924. .Serial No. 720,613.
To all whomv it may concern: a
Be it known that I, ALnnRrE. W'EBER, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Mo lalla, in the county of Clackamas and'State of Oregon, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Hat -Attachments, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. Y
This invention relates to certain improvements in hat attachments and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character constituting a removable supplemental crown adapted to be disposed over the crown of a hat proper to provide means to protect the head of the wearer against the sun and in a manner whereby the head is maintained cooled so that the liability is substantially eliminated of sunstroke or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which, when in applied position upon the crown of a hat, permits free circulation of air about the head of the wearer and which attachment simulates the general appearance of an ordinary hat.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my-improved hat attachment whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I v
The novel features of my invention "w ll hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through. a hat having applied thereto an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodi-. ment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of my improved attachment unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes the crown of ahat of a general type and with which is adapted to be employed my improved attachment.
As herein disclosed, my'improved attachment comprises a removable crown member M adapted to be disposed over the crown C of the hat proper and to closely simulate the the head may be maintained cooled;
supplemental "crown memberfl is of a size larger than that of the crown C so that when the member M is applied an air space is provided between the member 1 M and crown C for the free circulation of air, and
which circulation is assured by producing suitably positioned openings 1 in the member M, the crown G being also provided with suitably positioned openings 2 for circulation of air within the crownG in order that The tion, and the openings 2 in a like formation, and it is apparent by this arrangement that the ingress of air may be regulated by rotatable adjustment of the crown M with re spectto the crown C. y
The crown member M is mounted upon a frame F. This frame F comprises a bottom circular member 3. adaptedtobe rested upon the rim R of the hat'proper and extending upwardly from the member 3 are the upstanding bows having close contact with the inner wall of: the crown member M whereby said member M is heldagainst collapse and free of contact with the crown C I.
when the attachment is in applied position. As herein disclosed, the bows at are two in number and are substantially at right angles one to the other with the overlying portions of said bows being suitably connected one with the other, I y
The extremities of the hows t are inwardly oflset, as at 5, whereby the major portion of the crown member M immediately surroundlng the circular member 3 is spaced therefrom. The inwardly ofi'set portion. 5 of the bow members contacts with the outer face of the crown C, and tends to frictionally retain the removable crown M a in a set position.
The marginal portion of the member M is secured at predetermined points to the member 3 in any manner desired, as by stitching as indicated at 6.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hat attachment constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification wlthout departing from the princifples and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and for mation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1'. In combination with a hat having a series of openings arranged in annular formation through the crown, a removable supplemental crown disposed over the crown of the hat and supported by the rim, said supplemental crown when applied being spaced from the crown of the hat to provide an air chamber and having a series of openings a rranged in annular formation which may be brought into or out of register with the openings in the crown of the hat 2. In combination with a hat, a removable supplemental crown disposed over the crown of the'hat and supported by the rim of the hat, said supplemental crown when applied being spaced from the crown of the hat to provide an interposed air chamber, a frame within and carried by the removable supplemental crown including a circular bottom band, and upstanding continuous oppositely disposed fiat bow members secured to the bottom band, said bow members having close contact with the inner face of the supplemental crown, the extremities of the bow members secured to the band member being inwardly offset for contact with the outer face of the crown of the hat.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
ALBERT E. WEBER.
