UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUMMER-HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
Application filed March 10, 1920. SerialNo. 364,755.
7 To all wia omit may concern Be it known that I, SUTEKICHI SAKAGAMI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of 41 Matsuyamachi, Minami-Ku, at the city of Osaka in the Prefecture of Osaka and Empire of japan have invented a new and useful Summer-Hat, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in summer hats in which arrangements are made at the top or side or at both top and side of the crown of the hat-body whereby ventilation between the interior and exterior of the hat is made possible at all times or at intervals as required.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved summer hat calculated to prevent the wearers head from getting hot and aching attributable to bad ventilation incident to summer hats hitherto in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved summer hat so constructed as to promote ventilation when it is hot and to retard such ventilation when it is too cool.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of this invention will appear in the following detailed description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, showing an example or embodiment of. this invention to make it easily understood, in which:
Figure 1 is a slant view of a form of the summer hat of this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the interior; and, Fig. 3 is a 1011 'tudinal, sectional side view of the same; ig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the hat, and, Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the modified form.
Throughout the several views similar numerals and characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts.
The top or top-crown 1 of the hat-body A made of a suitable material is provided with or formed of a lattice-window 2 of any size or shape; and a tray-like (or plate-like) lattice-door 3 to fit in said lattice-window 2 to close it and somewhat smaller than the top 1 in area is inserted inside said to and sup ported by some suitable means. In the instance as shown in the accompanying drawing, the door 3 is supported by sewing suit able parts of the inside net 4 on the hatbody A at the upper end of the peripheral wall of the crown portion thereof and around the same, inserting the door upward through the center opening thereoi, and tightening the string 5, so as to reduce the opening to its smallest area, whereby the portion of the net surrounding the center opening is stretched tightly across the under face of the door, and whereby the latter is held in either registering, partially or wholly, or non-registering relation with respect to theventilating openings in the horizontal walls of the crown of the hat.) In this connection it is to be noted that, when the lattices of the window 2 are in parallel to the lattices of the door 3, the top 1 has no open space, and no special ventilation is produced, and the hat serves just like an ordinary summer hat.
To promote ventilation of the hat, the door 3 is turned either to the right or to the left. Since the window 2 remains stationary in relation to the door in this case, the lattices of the window 2 interlock slantly with those of the door 2, and open spaces S are formed between these two lattices. In this connection it is to be noted that said open spaces S can readily be closed by turning the door 3 reversely.
Thus it will be seen that, by using the improved summer hat of this invention, it is possible to adjust ventilation of the hat to suit various requirements easily and quickly, and that sanitation of the head is insured thereby in addition to the pleasant feeling owing to good ventilation.
As a modification of this invention, I provide series of holes radially to the top or top-crown 1, instead of the lattice-window 2, with the center of said top as a starting point; rovide similar series of holes, instead o the lattices, to the door 3, in such a way that the holes of the window aline with those of the door when said window and door are properly superposed; and, insert said door 3 inside said top 1 and support the door by some suitable means, such as stated hereinbefore. It is clear that, when the holes of the top 1 are in alinement with those of the door 3, ventilation of the hat is promoted, and that, when the holes of the of holes to the top or top-crown 1 of the hatbody A, without any further arrangement, to keep up ventilation at all times without materially increasing cost of manufacture of the improved summer hat.
As a further modification, I provide holes around that part of the hat-body wherea hat-band or ribbon is usually attached, and put thereon a hat-band or ribbon of silk gauze or similar material to insure ventilation of the hat Without changing the appearance of the hat. I desire it be understood, in this connection, that I may use this modification either in connection with any of the above-mentioned modifications or by itself to an ordinary summer hat.
Obviously considerable modifications are possible in the construction and design of this invention, and such modifications as are within the scope of the claim, I consider to be Within the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a hat structure, a crown portion provided with a plurality of ventilating openings, a sweatband arranged in the crown portion, a net lining extending upward from the sweatband and secured at points around the upper portion of the peripheral wall of the crown portion and having a centrally disposed opening, a disk-like door having openings adapted to be moved into and out of registry with the ventilating openings of the crown, said door being supported in desired position by said lining after insertion into such position through the center opening of said lining, and means for drawing the walls of the opening of said lining to gether after said door has been placed in proper position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto.
