HAT
Filed June 24. 1929 fa/War/ M7 60 fiTToEA/Ev Patented Dec. 2, 1930 UNITED STATES EDWARD wrr'roorr, on ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SUPERIOR I-IA'I COMPANY.
OF ST. LOUIS, 'MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI HAT Application filed-june 24,
This invention relates generally toheadwear. More particularly, my invention relates to a certaininewand useful lmprovement in hats especiallyof so-called harvest type and has for its chief object the provision of a harvest or other hat with a simple,
inexpensive, and eflicient crown-ventilator.
- And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel feaof the hat looking from the-inside; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmental' vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4-4, Figure 2. i
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which 11? lustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, A designates the hat proper, which may be of any standard or approved type and which, as is usual, comprises a-crown 1 and a brim 2 constructed of straw, fabric, or other suitable material;
Formed preferably in the "front of the crown 1, is a circular opening, as at 3,0f somewhat reduced diametrical dimension relatively to a disk 4 of wire or other suitable reticulated or open mesh material, Whose peripheral margln is su tably curled or folded, as at 5, about a ring 6, as bestseen 1n Figure 3, ring 6 being adapted for placement against the inner surface of the crown 1 and about the rim of the opening or aperture?) with the mesh-disk 4 stretched thereover, as
shown. g
Adapted for placement against" theouter surface of'the crown 1 and also about the rim of the opening or aperture-3,is anapproxi- 1929. Serial K053773370.
mately flat ring 7 provided peripherallywith PATENT OFFICE an annular series of rearwardly presented prongs 8 adapted for piercing projection through the crown 1 and to be then clinched over and upon the ring 6, whereby both the rings 6 and 7 are securely engaged with the crown 1 and the mesh-disk 4 retained in crown-ventilating position over the opening 3. Preferably the outerring 7 is re-enforced and also attractivelyembellished with a preferably integral spider 9.
The ventilator as a whole is inexpensive,
r is readily and conveniently attached to and upon the hat, and is eflicient in the perform} ance of its intended functions. f front elevational It is to be understood that changes or modifications in the'form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of'my hat-ventilator may be made and sub stituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the natureand principle of my invention.
Having thus described my-invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: j V v 1. A hat ventilator including, in combination, a first ring, a section of mesh-material disposed'over the arealof and marginally folded about the v ring, a second ring, and an annular series of prongs extending from the outer margin of the second ring adapted for projection through the crown of a hat and for clinching engagement about the first ring for securing said rings together and the ventilator to a hat. 7 1
' '2. In combination, a hat having crown provided with a circular opening in the wall thereof and aventilator for said opening,
the ventilator including a first ring, a sec- Y 'tion; of mesh-material disposed overthe area ofjand' marginally folded about the ring, the ring being adapted to fit against the inner face of the crown and about the rim of said opening, a second ring, and an annular I series of prongs extendmg from the outer margin of the second ring adapted for piercing projection through the crown and for clinching engagement with the first ring for securing said mesh-section over said opening, the second ring at its inner periphery extending over and concealing the rim of said opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWVARD WITTCOFF.
