T 0 all 20 ham it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS VALKER WVINCH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bogota, county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sportsmens Hats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to head gear which is especially adapted for use in hunting game.

It is extremely desirable that some bright distinguishing color should be displayed upon the heads of hunters of deer and other game so that the hunter may not be mistaken for game and accidentally shot as has too often been the. case. In fact this desirability is so thoroughly recognized that the laws of some States prescribe that when in the hunting region, hunters shall wear red material in their hats.

One object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a hat which, while it may be used in ordinary wear without that conspicuousness which would be caused by bright colors in it, may nevertheless be so changed or adjusted as to display bright colors when it is desired to do so, and this in a sightly, convenient and simple struc ture.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat with car protectors which may be folded up into the crown so as to be out of the way, but which hat will still fit the head of the wearer after the protectors have been moved out of the crown into the ear covering position, as well as when the protectors are folded into the hat crown.

Other and ancillary objects of the inven tion will appear hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat embodying the invention so adjusted as to conceal the ear protectors in the crown and also the bright colors;

Fig. 2 is a similar view of a hat shown in Fig. l but having its hand adjusted to expose a bright color as red;

Fig. 3 is a median transverse section of the hat showing the hat in its relation to the head of the wearer when its ear protectors are folded into the crown;

Fig. 4 is a similar section but showing the relation of the hat to the head of the Specification of Letters Patent.

wearer when the protectors are moved down out of the crown of the hat into ear covermg position; and

Referring to the drawings, the hat therein shown is of the well known Fedora style havlng a crown l and a brim 2. The crown has a crease 3 extending from front to back, and indentations 4 in the side as is well known in Fedora hats. Also ventilating holes 5 may be provided. The brim and crown of the hat as described are made of khaki cloth. About the hat extends a band which is secured to the crown of the hat at its bottom edge 5 and is also secured to the crown of the hat along a line 6 which is substantially at its middle. The edge 7 is free so that that half of the band between the

6 and 7 may be folded down over the other half, namely that portion between the seams 5 and 6, so that the band will then be in the condition as shown in Fig. 1 with two superposed layers, the inner one being the materials between the seams 5 and 6, and the outer one the materials between the seam 6 and the edge 7. The inner side of the outer layer, and the outer side of the inner layer are red so that when the band is adjusted as shown in Fig. 2 there is a large exposed surface, namely from the seam 5 to the edge 7 which is red. The outer side of the outer layer, however, is khaki color, the same as that of the material from which the crown and brim of the hat are constructed, so that when the two layers are folded into superposed position as described, the hat will have an appearance, as shown in Fig. 1, and with substantially all of the red concealed, the hat presenting a khaki colored exterior throughout.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4 the ear protector 8 comprises a flap which may be turned downwardly as shown in Fig. 4 so as to cover the ears, which is secured at one edge to the crown of the hat near its bottom edge, and may be folded upwardly into the crown of the hat when not in use as shown in Fig. 3. The flap extends across the back of the hat and toward the front far enough to cover the ears.

It will be seen that with the adjustment as shown in Fig. 3, the head opening in the hat is of a certain size and of such size as to fit the head of the wearer after the manner of any Fedora hat. When, however, the ear protector is moved downwardly into ear protecting position, it will be seen that a certain amount of material is removed from the edge of the head opening in the hat, and consequently the hat will be larger. Ordinarily this would result in the settling down of the hat upon the head of the wearer and the crease in the top of the crown might be the limiting stop against which the head of the wearer would come.

The Fedora hat, however, presents slop ing sides so that before the hat has sunk down unduly upon the head of the wearer, the head will come against the sloping sides of the hat as indicated in Fig. l so providing a fit which will securely hold the hat in position upon the head of the wearer. To prevent the crease from coming against the top of the head of the wearer and providing a support for the hat upon which it might be unsteadily held, the crease is removed by pushing up the crown of the hat as shown in Fig. 4:.

Vv hile the invention has been illustrated in what is considered its best application, it may have other embodiments without dcparting from its spirit and is not, therefore limited to the structure shown in the drawings.

hat I claim is:

1. A hat having a band secured to the crown at substantially its middle and having one edge free whereby one-half of the band may be folded over the other half.

2. A hat having a band secured to the crown at substantially its middle and having one edge free whereby one-half of the band may be folded over the other half, said band being of one color on one side and another color on the other side so that when one part of the band is folded over the other, one color is exposed and when it is unfolded another color is exposed.

3. A hat comprising a hat band having a plurality of layers and different colors displayed or concealed according to the rela tive adjustment of said layers.

4. A hat comprising a hat band having one layer of a certain color and a second layer superposed on the aforesaid layer and exposing a diiferent color.

5. A hat comprising a band having one layer of a certain color and a second layer superposed on the aforesaid layer and exposing a different color, the inside of said second layer being of a color the same as the first mentioned color whereby both layers expose the same color when the said second layer is turned inside out.
