Description
March 8, 1938, F. D. DAUPHIN MAKE-UP DRESS SHIELD OR GUARD Filed Sept. 17, 1937 Patented Mar. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to a toilet or make-up shield or guard but more particularly to a compact foldable device which may be conveniently carried by a person and easily unfolded for positioning around the neck of a garment in order to protect or shield the same during the operation of making up the face and neck.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of make-up shield for protecting the neck portion of a garment and in which a pocket is formed integrally with the device so that the same may be folded and inserted therein.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of make-up shield having a flange formed integrally therewith or attached thereto on the inner edge of the shield for insertion under the neck por tion of a garment for retaining the same in place.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved make-up shield showing diagrammatically the manner in which the same is positioned on the garment adjacent the neck of a person;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the pocket formed integrally with and at one end of the device;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional View taken on the line 5-4 in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the device is completely folded and inserted into the pocket which is formed as an integral part of the same.
In illustrating one form of my invention, I have shown the same as comprising a circularcollar or shield member III which may be made of any suitable material, though preferably of liquid or oil resisting, so as to prevent the penetration thereof and to protect the garment over which the shield is adapted to cover. This shield H! is preferably but not necessarily circular in forma tion and is provided with an opening or inner edge H which conforms to the upper edge or neck opening of the garment to be protected. Secured to the underside of and extending from the inner edge II is an outwardly extending flange I2 which is adapted to be inserted under the neck portion 13 of the garment generally indicated by the reference character [4. This flange l2 may be secured in any well known manner to the shield proper by stitching M or other suitable means. Formed integrally with and at one end of the circular shield member ID is a rectangular pocket I5. This pocket is formed by doubling the material back upon itself as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawing and having the outer edges thereof stitched as shown at It, so as to allow an opening as shown at l I. This opening I! permits the shield proper to be inserted after the same has been suitably folded so that it may be conveniently carried in compact form in the pocketbook or pocket of the person.
Summarizing the advantages and uses of my improved make-up shield, it will be readily understood that it may be placed around the neck of the wearer in the manner diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing with the flange l2 inserted under the neck I3 of the garment I l so that the shield proper extends from the neck portion of the garment to the points adjacent the shoulders thereof. The free ends of the device are brought together in the front portion of the garment and are overlapped as clearly illustrated by the reference character l8 so as to completely cover and shield the garment, thereby protecting the collar and yoke of the garment from soiling or injury by powder, cosmetics, etc., during the application thereof.
While in the above specification I have de scribed one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will of course be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed 'in the following claims.
What I claim is my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A make-up shield for the neck portion of a garment comprising a substantially circular shield member, a flange member secured to the inner edge of said shield member, and a pocket formed integrally with and at one end of said shield for compactly folding the same therein.
2. A make-up shield for the neck portion of a garment comprising a substantially circular shield member adapted to cover that portion of the garment surrounding and adjacent the neck thereof, an outwardly projecting flange member secured to the inner edge of said shield member and adapted to be inserted under the neck of the garment, and a pocket formed at one end of said shield by overlapping one end thereof for compactly folding said shield therein.
