In Canada March 20, 1940 6 Claims. (01. 2-185) This invention relates to an improved cap and supporting frame therefor.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a frame for caps or hats formed of relatively soft material.

Another object is the provision of a supporting frame adapted to be removably mounted in soft, washable caps or hats.

Another object is the provision of a supporting frame for caps which may be adjusted properly to fit into a cap of any reasonable size.

A further object is the provision of a supporting frame adapted to be fitted to caps without interfering with the normal size thereof.

A still further object is the provision of a supporting frame for relatively soft caps which is extremely simple in construction and which may be easily removed from or inserted into the cap.

Yet another object is the provision of a washable cap having an adjustable supporting frame removably mounted therein.

This invention relates particularly to caps made of relatively soft washable material, such as the type generally worn by railroad engineers, but it will be understood that it may be applied to any type of soft cap or hat. A frame is provided for the crown of the hat having a rim conforming in shape to the top of said crown and a plurality of supports for the rim carried by the cap adjacent the band thereof for retaining said rim above the latter. These supports may be carried by the cap in any suitable manner but the cap is preferably formed with pockets located outside the band, which communicate with the interior of the cap. Furthermore, it is preferable that either or both the rim and the supports be adjustable, that adjusted to regulate the size of the area bounded thereby and the supports may be adjusted in length to regulate the position of the rim above the cap band.

This invention is more fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a side elevation of a cap partly in section, embodying the invention,

Thi rim is formed in a plurality of sections 23 with the ends of a section overlapping the ends of each adjacent section. The overlapped ends of these sections slidably or adjustably fit through sleeves 24 which are sufliciently tight to retain the overlapped ends in any desired position although they will permit said ends to be moved therein to regulate the size of the area bounded by the rim. While two sections 23 have been illustrated, more may be employed if desired, in which case more than two sleeves 24 would be necessary. The sleeves 24 may be independent or they may be formed on the upper ends of the supports 22, as shown.

Each support 22 consists of two 25 with the adjacent endsof these sections overlapping. Each pair of the overlapped ends of the sections 25 is adjustably retained in position in any suitable manner, such as by a wire loop 26 through which the overlapped ends extend and a cam 21 piovtally mounted on the outer side of the loop which may be moved into or out of engagement with the outermost section by a lever 28 which lies substantially at right angles to the cam. The frame 20 may be adjusted to fit a cap or removed therefrom when it is desired to wash said cap or hat. When used,,the frame retains the cap in its proper shape and it provides an air or ventilation space between the wearer's head and the top of the cap to increase the comfort of the wearer. Furthermore, by placing the pockets l6 outside the band ii, the supports 22 do not interfere with nor alter the size of the cap and they do not cause the wearer any discomfort.

Various modifications maybe made in this invention without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the claims and, therefore, the exact forms shown are tobe talren'as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense, and it is desired that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are disclosed in the prior art or are set forth in the accompanying claims.

What I claim as my invention is:

l. The combination comprising a washable cap having a band, a soft crown on said band, a plurality of pockets formed on the cap outside pockets communicating with the interior of the cap, and a frame removably mounted in the cap, said frame having a rim conforming in shape to the top of the crown and a plurality of supports for said rim adapted to extend downwardly therefrom into the pockets.

The combination comprising a washable cap having a band, a soft crown on said-band, a plurality of pockets formed on the cap outside the band, said pockets communicating with the interior of the cap, and a frame removably mounted in the cap, said frame having a rim conforming in shape to the top of the crown, means for adjusting the rim to regulate the size of the area bounded thereby, a plurality of supports for said rim adapted to extend downwardly therefrom into the pockets, and means for adjusting the length of the supports to regulate the position of the rim above the cap band, said supports retaining the rim in a substantially horizontal plane.

5. A cap having a band, a soft crown on said of pockets formed on the cap outside the band, said pockets communicating with the interior of the cap and being adapted to receive the supports of a frame for retaining the crown in shape.

6. A washable cap having a band, a soft crown on said band, and a on the cap outside the band, said pockets communicating with the interior of the cap above the band and being adapted to receive the supports of a frame for retaining the crown in shape.
