FRANK V. THOZIEAS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO DR. BENTON SLEEPING GAR- MENT IJIILLS, F CENTERVILLE, Iv'ZIGEIGAN, A CQRPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
SLEEPING GARMENT. j
Application filed March 28, 1923. Serial No. 627,538.
T 0 all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it lmown that I, FRANK W. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sleeping Garment, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to sleeping garments of the type used'more especially by children, and having closed foot portions,
' and particularly to improvements in the sleeping garment covered by the Benton United States Letters Patent No. 599,995 dated March 1, 1898.
The object of the invention is to improve on the manner of making the foot portions of said garment whereby said portions have a tailored appearance, provide greater room and freedom for the feet and avoid binding over the instep.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a rear view of a garment embodymg the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the sole member of a foot portion of a garment. Fig. 3 is a side view of the sole member formed up substantially as it appears in use. Fig. d is the lower end portion of a leg of the garment with the ma terial opened up and disconnected from the sole. F ig. 5 is an inner side view of the lower end portion of a garment leg with the sole removed, and Figs. 6 and 7 are inner and outer side views, respectively thereof, with the sole member secured in position thereto.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the garment body having the leg portions 2 terminating in feet 8.
Each leg 2 is formed of a single piece of material doubled transversely upon itself and provided with a single lengthwise seam 4 at the inner side thereof, the leg being of tube form when opened up. The foot end of the leg terminates at its front side in a flap 5 forming the foot top and at its rear side in a flap 6 forming the heel, both being rounded at their ends and the former being longer than the latter. The two flaps are separated at the outer side of the leg by a V-notch 7 with the heel side thereof preferably formed in a slight ogee curve and with the other side thereof substantially straight as shown in Fig. 4.
The material forming each leg 2 is formed at the opposite side edges of its foot end with narrow projections 8 substantially of triangular form extending from a side of the respective foot to flaps 5 and 6 a short distance along said edges, as best shown in Fig. at. When the edges of the material are sewed together to form the seam 4: which extends along the outer edges of the projections 8 to the points 9 thereof, the provision of said projections causes a fulling of the instep and ankle portions of the foot.
Each foot includes a sole portion 10 of elongated form with its front and rear ends rounded and with its sides provided with long tapered extensions 11 extending lengthwise thereof and forming points 12 adjacent to the heel end of the sole as shown in Fig. 2. The sole members are sewed along their edges to the edges of the leg flaps 5 and 6 with the side extensions 11 thereof fitting up into the notches 7 and 13 provided at the outer and inner sides, respectively, of the leg between the inner end portions of the flaps 5 and 6. The portions without the dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 4 indicate the portions added to the respective parts of the garment as heretofore made.
It is evident that the leg material of the garment is formed at the outer and inner sides thereof with upwardly extending notches 7 and 13; that the instep and ankle portion of the foot is enlarged by reason of the provision of the extensions 8 on the edges of the leg material, which extensions, when sewed together, form a gore in the leg, and that the sole member 10 extends up around the sides of the foot with the projections ll sewed to the respective edges of the flaps 5 and 6 and fitting up into the leg notches 7 and 13.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A garment of the class described having a leg portion formed of a single piece of materiel transversely doubled n I on itself with the edges sewed together along the inner side of the leg, said material having flaps at n. it i its, outer end forming foot top and heel nortions, th e po's iteside "edges ofthe material being for; ed ad'jacen't to the respective flaps with narrow longitudinally extending tapered projections causing a fulling of the ankle and instep portion of the foot when theedges are sewed together to relieve strainhag eboiltthe ankle the flaps tapering away from each other at their inner and outer to form upwardly extending notches, and 2t sole member sewed to the flaps along the edges thereof and having side extensions which fit up into said notches and are sewed to the wells thereotto maintain the tullness efi'ected by the tapered projections.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name, to; this specification.
FRANK w. THOMAS.
