T'rs PATENT EFICE.
ROY SHANER, OF POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T AURORA KNITTING-r MILLS, 0F POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENN' UNION SUIT.
Application filed February 24, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoY SHANER, a citiizen of the United States, and a resident of Pottstown, in the county of lvlontgoincry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Union Suit, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to union suits and more particularly is intended for embodiment in a union suit for womens wear.
The general object of my invention is to provide a two-piece union suit that may be economically produced and which will possess a desirable shape with ample fullness in the leg parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a union suit formed in accordance with my invention showing the same as when in. use:
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank for forming the gusset or the second piece of the suit;
Figures 4 and 5 are horizontal sections respectively on the lines 44 and 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the two parts of the suit separated and ready for assemblage.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example a tubular piece is provided to form the body 10 of the garment. The tubular fabric is slit vertically at the front and back from the bottom edge thereof to approximately the waist line or above the waist line to produce downward extensions 11 at opposite sides of the garment adapted to form part of the garment legs. The side extensions 11. are spread apart and agusset 12 is inserted between said side members.
Serial No. 621,028.
The gusset 12 is formed from a blank designated 112 and shown in Figure 3. Said blank 112 is of dian'iond shape or substantial.- ly so and slits are produced therein at the n'iedial line or widest portion, the slits terminating short of the center of the garment, thereby producing substantially triangular shaped ends 14 joined at their bases by an integral web 15 disposed between the slits 13. The triangular shaped members 14 are disposed at the front and at the back of the garment between the side extensions 11 of the body and the opposed side edges united as by sewing. Thus, the lower portion of the gusset 12 and the side extensions 11 of the body jointly form the legs of the garment with the web 15 extending between the back and front at the inner sides of the leg openings at the bottom of the garment. The described construction produces a desirable fullness in the garment at the lower portion and the garment may be produced with facility and economy.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitues a. practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
A bifurcated garment, comprising a tube. of fabric having its front and back slit upwardly from its lower end, a single diamond-shaped gusset hating the edges of its end portions secured to the walls of the slits at the front and back of the garment, and having transversed slits at its inter mediate portion forming portions of the leg openings at the bottom of the garment;
ROY SHANER.
