UNION-SUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed May 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,116.
garment of this type so designed that itmay be readily and economically manufac tured from tubular web and, when complete, may be worn with ease and comfort.
The manner in which I accomplish this object is hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, 1n which Figure 1 is a face view of a union suit constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the blank of tubular web which constitutes the body member of the garment, and
Fig. 3 is a face view of the blank of tu bular web which constitutes the leg member of the same.
The garment consists of but two pieces, a body member 1 and a leg member 2, these members being united by means of a continuous seam 3 passing entirely around the garment and, in order that it will at no time cause discomfort to the wearer, being disposed above the crotch. The body memher 1 is shown provided with arm holes 1 and neck opening l and the cutting of these apertures constitutes the only waste of material in the manufacture of the garment.
The opposite ends 2 and 2 of the leg member 2 constitute the right and left legs of the garment.
In the manufacture of the garment the blank of tubular web which constitutes the leg member 2 is transversely slit, centrally, as at 1, Fig. 3, across about two-thirds of its width. This slit provides a continuous edge of web which is united, by means of the seam 3, to the continuous edge of web at the bottom of the body member 1. The depth of the slit 4 is such that the length of the continuous edge of web provided thereby will be greater than the length of continuous edge of web at the bottom of the body member 1, so that, when the two edges are united, the lower portion of the body member will be stretched, as at 1, Fig. 1,
in order to conform to the size of the opening provided in the leg member by said slit, thus providing ample room for the hips of the wearer of the garment.
That portion 5 of the leg member 2 which intervenes between the end of the slit 4 and the side of the tubular web constitutes the crotch portion of the garment, and, when the garment is made of knitted web, which is the usual practice, the wales of the web will, at the crotch, run from one leg of the garment to the other. As a result, the prime elasticity ofthe fabric, at this point, is from front to rear, which condition permits ready yielding of the crotch to accord with changes in posture of the wearer of the garment without, at any time, allowing a loose or baggy condition of the crotch to prevail. A proper and comfortable fit is thereby insured.
Trimming of any desired character may be added to the neck opening, arm holes and bottom of the legs, in order to lend an attractive appearance to the completed garment.
Being the same, both front and back, the garment may be worn with either face forward.
I claim:
1. A union suit embodying two pieces of tubular web united by a continuous seam disposed above the crotch, one of said pieces of web constituting the body of the garment and the opposite ends of the other of said pieces of web constituting the legs of the garment.
2. A union suit embodying two pieces of tubular web, one of said pieces of web constituting the leg member of the garment and transversely centrally slit to provide a continuous edge which is united to the continuous edge at the bottom of the other of said pieces of web which constitutes the body member of the garment.
3. A union suit embodying two pieces of tubular web, one of said pieces of web constituting the 12 member of the garment and transversely centrally slit to provide a continuous edge which is united to the continuous edge at the bottom of the other of said pieces of Web' Whieh constitutes the body member of the garment, the continuous edge provided by the slit in said first named piece of Web being greater in length than the con tinuous edge at the bottom of said last named piece of Web, whereby said last named piece of Web is stretched at its bot tom portion When said continuous edges are 10 united.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
