A. E. ROBERTSON NETHER GARMENT Filed Oct. 18, 1927 ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 20, 1928.

NETHER GARMENT.
Application filed October 18, 1927. Serial No. 226,889.
The object of the invention is to provide an undergarment for the nether portion of the body which shall be of extremely simple form and therefore susceptible of being easily and cheaply made; to provide a garment of this character in which the crotch shall be protected with a double ply of goods, the inner ply being unattached except at the waist line; and to provide a construction wherein the leg and haunch coverings are defined by the connecting in a certain manner of the edges of a rectangular piece of goods of which the garment is formed.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the garment in open position such as when it is to be laun dered.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the garinentarranged preparatory to wearing.
Figure 3 is a plan view similar to Figure 1 but looking at the opposite side from that shown in said figure.
Figures -l and are sectional views respec tivel on the planes indicated by the lines 4'. tl: and 5-5 of Figure 2.
The garment consists of a rectangular piece of goods hemmed around the edges as i11 dicated at 11. The upper edge 12 constitutes the major portion of the waist-band when the garment is arranged for wearing. Disposed centrally of the piece 10 and extending longitudinally thereof is a central slit 14: defining a crotch opening provided with fasteners 15 employed to keep the opening closed when the garment is being worn. Buttons 16 are disposed along the lower longitudinal edge of the rectangular piece and the button holes 17 along the two side edges adjacent the upper edge.
A crotch strip 18 is disposed on top of the rectangular piece, being connected with the latter at the upper edge 12 but being unattached to the rectangular piece anywhere else except when the garment is on the body the lower edge 19 of the crotch piece is attached to the waist-band or upper edge 12 of the rectangular piece by means of buttons 20 on the waist-band 12 and button holes 21 in the free edge 19 of the crotch piece.
In applying the garment to the body the buttons 16 on the lower edge engage with the button holes 17 on the side edges and thus the leg coverings A and haunch covering B are formed, the section of the lower edge 19 between the two middle buttons thereon delining the front portion ofthe waist-band. The crotch strip is, as before stated, connected at its free edge to the waist-band by means of the buttons 20 and thus constitutes the inner ply of the double crotch covering which the garment provides. The garment may be ad justed to suit the waist ofthe user by the selective engagement of the button holes in the crotch strip with the spaced buttons 20 on the waistband. Tabs 22 are connected to the corners of the rectangular piece at the lower end and when the legs of the garment are formed as above stated, these tabs constitute a means for connection with the infant supporters 23 by means of which the stockings may be supported.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
l. A nether garment comprising a rectangular piece of which one end edge defines the waist-band, the side edges adjacent said waistband and the lower edge being pro vided with complemental fasteners which when attached cause the connected sections to define leg portions.
2. A nether garn'ient comprising a rectangular piece of which one end edge defines the waistband, the side edges adjacent said waist-band and the lower edge being provided with complemental fasteners which when attached cause the connected sections to define leg portions and leaves part of the lower edge of said piece constituting a section of the waist-band.
, A nether garment comprising a rectangular piece of which one end edge defines the waist-band, the side edges adjacent said waistband and the lower edge being provided with complemental fasteners which when attached cause the connected sections to define leg portions, and a crotch strip having a permanent attachment with said rectangular piece at the center of the edge defining the waist-band, the remaining end of strip having a detachable connection with the waist-band at the front.
In testimony whereof she aflixes her signature.
