Application fil'ed J'anuary 15', 19221. snainofeiasaa;
To ail whom it may concern.
Be it known tliat I, 'J'orIrtBoNAYiym a" citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county, of New York and State of New York, havemade certain new and useful Improvements in Poudreuses, and hereby declare the following specification to be a description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce a coinncodious and readily movable article for use as a convenient dressing-table and for housing and protecting articles for toilet use, usually called a poudreuse. Also to provide a device which is very light in structure and slight in the size of its various parts, produced by a novel construction which so braces and combines the several parts that the whole structure is strong enough to resist strain. Also to provide a top to such structure consisting of covering leaves which may be opened out on the sides for use for extra table space which will maintain considerable strain when weight is placed on ihem.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view showing the covering top opened out and the mirror raised;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the covering leaves folded on the central part to act as a cover;
Fig. 3 is a vertical central cross section of Fig. 1.
Fig. t is a separate view of one of the sides with leg portion; and
Fig. 5 is a cross section of one of the legs as complete.
The device is preferably made of wood having a rectangular body portion formed by joining four flat surrounding side pieces A, A, which have portions extending down to form supporting legs a, at. These four side pieces are secured to each other at the corners by angle moldings b, 6, attached to their inner sides. The body portion is suitably partitioned and divided into compartments and provided with a hinged mirror B, adapted to fold down so its back is level with the top edges of the body portion.
At the ends of the body portion or well are hinged two folding leaves or wings C, C, each of which will cover one half of the body portion when closed over it, and will also form convenient resting or table spaces when opened out flat as shown in Fig. 1.
In the use of tables having leaves of this class, great'strain on the: attaching hinge;
occurs where the wings at the hinged point;
0, c,'rest directly against the body of? the.
table. This is particularly sowhenfweighfti is placed on the outerpoitionof the wings when opened, owing to the leverage caused thereby. Heretofore this strain has been relieved by auxiliary supports pulled out from the body of the table, on which the leaves rest. In my improved table, I provide means to relieve such strain and give all the benefits of a supporting bracket of considerable depth when the extension Wings are opened. This bracket forming device also provides a useful confining ledge at each end of the top of the stand or table, when the wings are closed over the body portion, and makes ready handles as hereinafter described.
At a point directly over the hinged ends of the wings, I provide projections or standards D, D, which are securely fastened to the wings. These standards have their top portion or crown bent outwards at d, d, sufficient distance to pass the projecting portion of the hinges c, 0, when the wings are opened out as will appear in Fig. 1. The curved portion of the standards D, D, when the wings are opened, will then fold over the hinges and rest against the body portion or well of the device and firmly support the wings.
The mirror B, is hinged at each side of its rear edge to the dividing walls or partiti ons e, e, and :fits snugly between them when folded down.
The crown or bent portion d, d, of the bracket forming standards D, D, also provides convenient handle portions for lifting and moving the stand when the leaves are closed. These brackets thus provide an element in the construction which gives them a triple useful purpose, in addition to increasing the ornamental effect.
The projections or standards D, D, each swing through an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees with the folding leaves or wings C, C, when the latter swing from one of their positions to the other. When the folding leaves or wings C, C, are located in their position over the body portion of the device to close the upper end thereof, they are in proper position to function as handles.
I prefer to make the bracket forming standards D, D, and hinges 0, 0, continuous across the end of the leaves C, C, but this continuity may be broken provided their position and their form in cross section is substantially maintained, so the space formed by the knee of the hinge is bridged by the standard when the leaf is opened out.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a table, the combination of a rcctangular upper body portion, a pair of leaves hinged to said body portion and closing the same When swung to a horizontal position thereover and standards extending up- Wardly and outwardly from said leaves When the latter are located to close said upper body portion, said standards in this position functioning as handles for the table, and tending to tightly close said leaves with the upper portion of said table when pressure is brought under the outer portions of the standards, said standards bearing against the sides of the table and functioning as supporting brackets, when said leaves are swung one hundred and eighty degrees from their first position, to uncover the upper body portion of the table.
