FOLDING BED.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. BETTEGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a folding bed adapted, when open in position for use, to provide a usual bed frame and arranged to be folded so as to have the appearance of a different article of furniture such as a buffet or sideboard.
It is the object of the invention to pro vide a construction of this character of few parts and which may be readily operated.
Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following de scription of the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the bed in folded position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the bed frame extended into position for use before the mattress has been unfolded.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the mattress partially unfolded.
Fig. *1 is a similar view with the mattress unfolded and the bed in position for use.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a framentary secti the line7-7 of Fig. 4.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion I have shown the bed, when folded. arranged to have the appearance of a buffet or sideboard, although it will be obvious that the bed may be arranged, when thus folded, to have the appearance of any desired aron taken on ticle of furniture of the same general conformation.
The folding bed comprises a head. member forming the main portion of the buffet, a foot board forming the front of the body of the buffet, and side boards comprising pivotally connected sections arranged to be folded within the head board and engaged at the respective ends of the side boards to the head member and to the foot member. I
As an instance of this arrangement, the head member may comprise a body consisting of a rear wall 1 and side walls 2; a top extending upwardly from the rear portion of the body thus formed and, preferably,
Specification of Letters Patent.

comprising a rear wall 3, side walls 4, a top 5, and a front 6. The upper end of the body portion of the buffet in front of the upwardly extending top is, preferably, closed by a top surface 7 having hinged connections 8 with the upwardly extending top of the buffet, so that said top surface may be swung upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, when the bed is extended into position for use.
The foot board of the bed consists of a panel 9, the outer surface of which may be formed to represent drawers or the like, this foot board being arranged, when folded, to
close the front of the body portion of the buffet. For this purpose recesses 10 may be provided at the front open side of the head board into which the foot board is moved when the bed is folded, the upper edge of the foot board being, preferably, provided with a lip 11 over which the front edge 12 of the top surface 7 may be engaged when the bed is folded to retain the foot board in its folded position.
The hollow space within the head member of the bed is adapted to receive the folded mattress and the folded side boards of the bed when the latter is in its folded position. As an instance of this arrangement the side boards of the bed may each comprise sections 13 and 14 pivotally connected at their ends as by a hinge connection 15, this hinge being shown asa strap hinge and so arranged that the sections of the side board may be folded inwardly along side one another with their outer surfaces adjacent one another. When the bed is unfolded the side boards thus formed are swung from their position along'sideone another to a position with their ends end to end thereby providing the longitudinally extending side boards as shown in Fig.2.
For this purpose the ends of the side boards. thus formed, are provided with hinged connections with the head member and with the foot board of the bed respectively. These hinged connections are shown respectively at.16 and 17, the hinges, preferably, being usual strap hinges. The hinge 16 between the head member and the, side board may be secured to the side wall 2 of the headmember, and the hinge 17 at the opposite end of the side board is, preferably, secured to the rear surface of the foot board 9.
By the construction as thus described it will. be seen that when the bed is in its the front of the head member and the side boards will be received within the head member behind the foot board with the sections of the respective side boards folded along side one'another, and when it is desired to extend the bed into position for use the foot board maybe drawn outwardly thereby un-' folding the sections of the .side boards until they assume a position with the sections in longitudinal alinement thereby providing a usualbed frame. Suitable casters 18 may be provided upon the foot board, and the head member may also be provided with the usual casters.
The mattress for the bed frame, thus provided, is arranged to be folded wlthin the head member when the bed 1s in its folded position and is adaptedto be unfolded on to the bed frame when the bed is extended for use. The mattress.maycomprise the usual box mattress having the folding sections 19 and .20, each of these sections cemprisinga usual base frame .21 having the upturned edges 22 and upon which the usual springs 23 are mounted, the springs being covered by the usual mattress 24; having its edges connected to the .side edges 22 of. the base frame. The sections of the mattress'are hinged together at their ends as by the hinges 25 having the respective straps thereof secured to the abutting ends of the respective base frames of the mattress sections, the parts being so an rangedthat the hinged meeting edges of the mattress. sections extend transversel f of the bedframewith the mattress sections adapted to be folded one upon the other with their mattress surfaces adjacent one another.
The mattress ispivoted within the head member of the bed so that the head section of the mattress may be swung down upon the bed frame and the foot sectionof the mattress then swung down upon the bed a frame, the side boardsof the latter, for. this purpose, belng tending ledges provided with inwardly ex- 26 upon the respective sections thereof upon which the mattress is adapted to rest when in position for use upon the bed frame. As an instance of this arrangement, the head section of the mattress-is provided at 1ts opposlte sides with pivotal connections with the side boards of the head member, these pivotal connections being, preferably, arranged approximately midway of the length of the head section of the mattress, so that the mattress sections, when folded upon one another, will be sup ported in vertical position within the head member as shown in Fig. 6; Each of the pivotal connections for the head section of the mattress may comprise a bolt 27 extending through the side wall 2 of the head mem her and having a bracket 28 journaled thereon, said bracket having its end 29 extending 7 upon the other and supported in vertical position withln the head member of the bed,
and the side boardsof the bed frame will be folded with their sections one against the other within the head member of the bed in front of the folded mattress, and the foot board of the bed will be folded within the front open end of the head member in front the folded mattress and'side boards to provide a front closure for the head memher. The top surface 7 of the head member being lowered over the edge of the foot member, when thus folded, an article of furniture is provided completely disguising the true character of the bed.
il henit is desired to use the bed as such. the top surface 7 being swung upwardly and the foot board 9 being drawn outwardly, the side boards will be extended to provide a usual bed frame upon which the sections of the mattress may beunfolded.
7 Various changes may be made without departing from th spirit of the invention as claimed. 7 i
What is claimed is: V 1. A folding bed comprising a head member forming a recess, a foot member, foldable side boards having hinged connections at their respective ends with the head member and the foot member, a mattress comprising head and foot sections arranged to be foldedone upon the other, and pivotal connections between the respective sides of the head section ofthe mattress and said head memher. V
2. A folding bed comprising a head memher, a foot member, hinged side boards pivotally connected to thehead and foot meml ers, and a folding mattress pivotally mounted on the head member.
3. A folding bed comprising a head member forming a recess, a footmember, hinged side boardspivotally connected to the head and foot members, and a folding'mattress pivotally mounted. in the recess of the head i name tot-his specification.
