Description

C. B. HELMS. FOLDING SWING. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-12. 1921.
Patented Aug. 1, 1922.
- INVENTOR. Cass/a5 .5 #5015.
l A TTORNE Y.
CASSIUS B. HELMS, OLE INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF'FORTY PER CENT TO IVAN M. HELMS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
FOLDING SWING.
Application filed September 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAssIUs B. HnLMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Swings, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates primarily to folding swings, and the prime feature of the inven tion is the provision of means for folding parts of the swing together and in compact formation.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a water proof covering so arranged that when the parts of the swin are folded together Water will be excluded rom the seat portion of the swing.
And a further feature of the invention is the provision of means for securing parts of the swing in folded position.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the swing structure in operative position, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view thereof in folded position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the frame or seat portion of the swing which may be constructed in any suitable manner and having a cushion 2. At the ends of the seat portion 1 are end sections 3, preferably of wood, which project a distance above the seat and have their outer upper corners channeled or tapered as shown at 4: to more readily drain or shed any water that might come in contact therewith and prevent the water from gaining access to the seat portion when parts of the swing are in folded position.
The seat 1 is preferably provided adjacent its ends with arms 5 which are connected to parts of the seat by means of hinges 6 so that said arms may be folded inwardly and downwardly and rest on the cushion portion of the seat.
The seat 1 is provided with a back 7 which is connected to one edge of the seat by means.
of hinges 8 preferably of the strap variety and the inner face of said back may also be provided with a cushion 9. The length of the back 7 is such that when folded over the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1922,
Serial No. 500,105.
seat portion 1 the ends thereof will rest on the top edges of the end sections 3 and as the arms 5 fold downwardly, the structure will be in very compactformation when the parts are all folded together. I11 order to fully protect the swing, especially the seat portion thereof from the inclemencies of the weather, a covering 10 of water proof material is secured over the outer face of the back 7, and also over one edge of the seat 1, so as to cover the hinges 8 and prevent water or the like from gaining access to the seat from the rear edge thereof. The covering 10 projects a distance beyond the opposite or top edge of the back 7 and is formed into a flap 11 which when the back is in lowered position, folds over the forward edge of the seat 1 and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of the usual or any preferred form of snap clasps l2 and when the swing is in operative position the flap is folded to the rear of the back 7 and secured in the same manner.
By this construction it will be seen that the parts of the swing may be readily folded together or opened up for use without interfering with the supports for the swing and when in folded position and the flap properly secured over the forward edge of the seat, no water or the like can reach the seat portion of the swing owing to the covering of water proof material and the manner in which it is secured to the swing structure.
It will be understood, of course, that while I have shown and described the present invention as applied to use in connection with swings, the same features may be employed with chairs, settees or similar porch furniture the construction and operation of the parts being similar in all instances.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A folding swing comprising a seat portion, arms hingedly secured to the seat portion and adapted to fold inwardlly thereover, upwardlly extending end sections secured to the seat portion against which said arms rest when in open position, a back hingedly secured to one edge of the seat and adapted to fold over the seat and the inwardly folded arms with its ends resting on the upper edges of said end sections, the outer upper my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, corners 09f said end sections being tapered, a vthis 3rd. day of September, A. D. nineteen Water proof covering attached to said back hundred and twentyone. i i and one edge of the seat, and means for re- CASSIUS B. HELMS. In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set V MIL.
