Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 22, 1918. Serial No. 259,224.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ RICHARD BLANKENNAGEL, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Vindows, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety devices for windows, and has as its principal object the provision of means whereby a person is prevented from accidentally falling out of the window opening,
, when leaning outward therefrom, as in the process of cleaning.
`A further object is to provide such devices in forms which may be readily engaged or disengaged from the window frame and which present no impediment to the use or operation of the window.
A still further object is to produce devices in forms which may be cheaply manufactured and placed in position without difculty.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and co-mbination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of a building with a window and indicating; the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through a conventional type of window.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the safety apron partly broken away in order to show its construction.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing one of the movable bracket elements.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing one of the pair of brackets that are engaged with the window frame.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view showing a modied rod holder.
In these drawings the, numeral 10designates an ordinary type of building in which is a window having a frame 11 and sash 12 of the common type of construction.
Secured to the inner side of the frame 11, at the lower corner adjacent to the window sill, is a bracket plate 14, having openings l5 to receive screws, nails, or like fastenings.
Formed with the lower portion of the bracket is a rectangular extension 16, having a corresponding rectangular opening 17 passing'4 entirely therethrough. Engageable in the rectangular opening 17 is a square shank 2O formed with a movable bracket 21, the same extending inwardly and provided with a spherical head 22 having a circular opening 23 and a winged clamp screw 24 by which the rod 25 may be secured in the circular opening 23 in an adjusted position.
These rods are preferably made of tubes and are adapted to iit neatly within the opening 23 at their lower ends.
Engaged with the rods is a strong apron 26 made of canvas or other suitable material the same being secured to the rods by stitching along the inturned marginal edges 27.
In operation the fixed stationary bracket elements 16, having been secured upon the inner sides of the window frame, the movable elements are entered therein and then the rods 25 are entered into the openings 23, the apron 26 being extended a'ngularly at the front of the window. In the modiiication shown in Fig. 7 the supporting arm.
21 is formed with a semi-spherical head 30 from which extends lateral lianges 31 and engageable therewith are similarly formed elements 32 formed with another semi-spherical element 23 the elements 30 and 3.3, having a spherical recess formed in the interior adapted to receive a ball 35 made in sections and containingq an opening to receive the rod 25, the holding elements being secured by bolts 26 which, when in a clamped position, cause the sections of the ball or sphere 35 to close together clasping the rod 25 and obviously holding the same in any adjustment, it being possible to set the rods 25 at any desired inclination or raise or lower the same in an obvious manner.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of application and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safety device for windows, the combination with a pair of brackets adapted to be secured on the inner sides of a window. a square base socket open at the top integral with said brackets, movable bracket elements comprising a square shank engageable in the square base socket of said iixed brackets, heads formed with said movable brackets, a pair of rods slidable in said heads,
clamp screivs engageable in said heads for holdingsaid rods in adjusted position in said heads, and an apron attached to said rods extending to opposite sides of the Window and at an angle therefrom.
2. In a safety device for windows, the
combination with a vvindon7 frame, of a pair of brackets secured to the innermost sides adjacent to the Window sill, said brackets having rectangular' openings at their lower ends, movable brackets having stems engageable in the openings in said fixed brackets,
said movable brackets extending toward FRANZ RIC HARD BLANKENNAGEL.
