which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with the windows of buildings and other structures.

My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device or seat designed to be employed on the'open window of a building or other structure whereby one or more persons may occupy the seat either in a sitting or standing posture without the occupants being liable to injury by falling from the win dow, and which is of a type adapted'to be folded when not in use, as well as being of a form to allow the device to be detachably mounted on the window for also serving as a balcony as occasion requires. The invention consists essentially of a seat member adapted to be supported so as to extend outwardly of the window at'its sill to allow one or more persons to occupy the seat member in either sitting" or standing postures. Hinged to the seat member is a guard member adapted to be swung from a foldedposition upon the seat member to a rightangular position upwardly from the seat member as well as being in spaced relation to the window, and on the seat member as well as on the window frame is provided means for detachably connecting this member to the sill of the window.

Other objects of the invention are to provide adjustable brackets whereby both the seat member and guard member may be removably fastened to the sides of the frame of the window; and to provide a window seat of a simple, efficient and durable construction which may be made in any desired shape and size. Vith these and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,

and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

The device has a seat member 10 which may be of any desired shape, but the form of the seat member shown is substantially rectangular to provide a front edge 11, a rear edge 12 and straight ends 13 and 14. This seat member may be in the form of a board, and when made of wood it may be strengthened by fastening on its underside three spaced cross-strips, as 15, 16, 17 while on the top of the board may also be fastened three strips of metal, as 18, 19, 20, of lengths so that their ends overlap the front and rear edges of the seat member besides overlapping the ends'and exposed faces of the cross strips 15, 16, 17, and all of these metal strips are countersunken in the top face of the seat. I prefer to make the seat member or'board 10 of a size to removably fit between the stiles 21 and 22 of the window frame, as 23, of a building or other structure so that the seat member may be arranged whereby its front edge 11 will contact with the outer edge of the sill, as 24, of the window.

At the rear edge 12 of the seat member 10 is a guard member 25 which serves to prevent one or more persons who may occupy the seat member from falling out of the window. This guard member is preferably in the form of a frame of approximately a rectangular shape of a length corresponding to thelength of the seat member 10, while being of any desired width. This guard member or frame may be of any suitable form, though the frame illustrated is composed of a 7 lower cross-bar 26, an upper crossbar 27, end bars 28 and 29 which connect the ends of the lower and upper cross-bars, and the central parts of the lower and upper cross-bars are also connected by a cross-bar 30. Serving as means to removably attach the seat member 10 to the sill 24 of the window 23, spaced parts of the top of the window sill corresponding to the spacing of the metal strips 18 and 20 may be transversely cut-out or grooved if desired' In these grooves are provided supporting bars or brackets, as 36 and 37, both of whiehare similarly formed. The supporting bars 36 and 37' are made of metal, and each of the bars has a straight bodypart, as 38, of a length to extend from the inner edge of the sill of the window to the outer edge of the sill. These body parts of the supporting 37 are disposed in the grooves besides being screwed or otherwise secured to the sillbflOn the outer end of the body part 38 of each of the supporting bars is a substantially L.-shaped extension to provide a downwardly bent vertical arm and a longitudinal arm 41. These L-shapedarms or extensions 40 and 41 of the supporting bars are disposed so that the vertical arms 40 are in contact with the window sill and so that the longitudinal arms 41 of both bars extend outwardly from the lower part of the outer edge of the sill.

Projecting upwardly from the body part 38 of each of the supporting bars 36 and 37 at the juncture of the body part with the L- shaped extensions is a hook42 whichoverhangs the top of the body part of the bar, and through the vertical arm of each of the L-shaped extensions is an opening 43. The

Tothe loop 54 is movably attached a loop 56 provided on one end of a rod or wire57 which is of a length to extend to part of the exterior of one of the stiles of the window frame considerable distance above the seat member, andthesecond end of, this rod ter- 11 minates with a loop 58. right angularly from the hook, and these stems of the hooks are screwed in the exterior of the stiles of the window frame so that thehooks protrude from the frame to allow the loops 58 and 61 of the rods 57 and 60 to be removably guided over the hooks. In order to also support the hooks for withstanding a heavy load thereon in the stiles 0f the window frame above the hooks may be driven screws, as 7 4.- and 7 5, and on each of these screws is held one end of a link 76 having its other end connected to the stem 7 3 of ti e hook thereunder. The free end of each of the hooks 72 is of a length to extend some distance above its stem 73, and this extending end of each hook is exteriorly threaded. On the threaded end of each hook is screwed a nut 77, and both of the nuts are of sizes to cause the entrances into the hooks 72 to be closed after the rods 57, 60, 66, 68 are attached to the hooks.

When the seat member 10 is fastened to the sill of the window, and following the upward swinging of the guard member 25 from the seat member, as above explained, the rods 57 and 66 of the bracket 51 are detacha-bly fastened to the hook 7 2 of the catch 71 by first removing the nut 77 from the hook and guiding the loops 58 and 67 over the hook, after which the nut 77 is rescrewed on the threaded end of the hook 72. The rods 60 and 68 of the bracket 52 are detaclr ably fastened to the hook 72 of the catch 7 O in a similar fashion, and the seat member 10 together with the guard member 25 will be removably connected to the frame of the window. In the eye bolt 62 of the bracket 51 is movably held the loop 78 of a rod 79 having a hook 80 on its second end, and in the eye bolt 63 of the bracket 52 is movably held the loop 81 of a rod 82 provided with a hook 83 on its second end. The rods 79 and 82 are of lengths so that when swung accordingly their hooks 80 and 83 will respectively engage the central parts of the rods 57 and 60 of the brackets 51 and 52, and these rods will thereby be additionally reinforced to hold the seat member when occupied by one or more persons. Thus I provide a simple, eflicient and durable foldable seat adapted to be removably applied to the window of a building or other structure for use by persons either in sitting or stand ing postures.

In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In combination with a window seat including a seat member having a pair of spaced pins protruding from the forward edge thereof, a pair of supporting bars for said seat member, each embodying a rearwardly projecting straight body part adapted to be secured to a window-sill and having a hook at its forward end, a vertical arm rigid with and depending from said body part and having an aperture therethrough, and a forwardly extending longitudinal arm projecting from the bottom edge of said vertical arm and upon which said seat member rests, said pins each projecting into the aperture of one of said vertical arms, and hooks carried by the seat member adjacent said pins and adapted to engage the hooks of the supporting bars to retain said seat member against displacement from the window-sill.

2. In combination with a; window seat having a pair of spaced pins projecting forwardly from the forward edge thereof, keepers adapted to be secured to a windowsill and to receive said pins. and coperating hooks carried by said seat and said keepers for retaining the pins within the latter and the seat against displacement from the window-sill.
