This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a roll window screen and sash clamps. Its primary object being to provide a roll window screen and means to readily attach or detach the same to or from a window sash.
A further object of the invention is to design and construct an enclosed spring roll window screen having means to attach the same in a window frame, and means to secure the outer end of the screen to the window sash in a manner that the screen will be drawn out as the window sash israised and rolled when the sash is lowered.
With these and other objects in view that may 5 appear while the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which:--
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window showing my improved screen in use therewith.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View showing the spring roll and sash attaching clamps.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the movable clamp attachment mechanism.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate cor- 30 responding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a window frame ill and sill ll having a sliding sash l2 mounted therein in the usual manner. Resting on the sill is an elongated box 13 which is at- 35 tached to the frame by the screws M in the side brackets 55 or in any other convenient manner.
Enclosed in the box is a spring roller l6 secured in a manner common to this type of roller and a wire screen H is secured thereto at one end and rolled on the same. The outer end of the screen passes through a slot l8 in the box l3 and is secured to a cross member l9 by a cleat 2B.
The cross member I9 is attached to the lower edge of the window sash l2 by inside clamps 2| which are secured in fixed relation to the said cross member l9 and by movable outside clamps 22. The outside clamps are pivoted on a jointed bar 23 having a hinge joint 24 therein. Said bar is slidably mounted on the cross member H! by pivot pins 25 engaging elongated slots 26 in the said bar. This permits the center or the hinge joint 24 being pulled inwards, as shown in the dotted lines of Fig. 3, which causes the outer ends 27 of the bar being pushed outwards and consequently moving the clamps 22 outwards away from the sash.
The clamps 2| and 22 as shown in the section Fig. 4, are shaped to grip the lower edge of the sash l2. The fixed clamps 2i being curved out- Ward at the top as shown at 28 and the clamps 22 curving inward at the top 29 form efficient means to detachably secure the device to the sash, the same being operated from the inside.
As the spring in the screen roller will have a strong tendency to pull downward on the sash l2 means are provided to oifset the same. These comprise grip members 30 pivoted at the outer ends of member IS in a manner that when the same are in alignment with the, said member the outer extremities thereof they will project to grip the sills of the window frame and thereby hold the device in its required position. A slot or aperture 3! may be provided in the box l3 to allow the escape of any rain or dirt which may gain entry thereto.
It is obvious that the device may be inverted and used in conjunction with the upper sash, if sodesired, in which case the box will be mounted at the top of the frame and the screen drawn down with the sash.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the device has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a roll window screen and sash clamps as described comprising a screen mounted on a rotatable spring roller, an enclosure therefor secured to a window sill, and clamp means detachably securing the screen to the lower edge of a window sash from the inside thereof, said clamp means comprising inner clamp elements fixed to a cross member and outer clamp elements pivoted to a centrally hinged bar, said bar movably pivoted at points removed from said outer clamps to said cross-member in a manner to move the outer clamps away from the sash as the center of the bar is pulled inwards and to secure the clamps to the sash when said bar center is pushed toward the window.
2. A sash clamp for roll window screens comprising a cross bar attached to the free end of the screen, fixed clamp elements carried by said bar adapted to engage one side of a sash rail, movable clamp elements adapted to engage the opposite side of a sash rail, and means carried by said cross bar for moving said movable clamp elements into and out of engagement with the sash rail.
3. A sash clamp for roll Window screens comprising a cross bar attached to the free end of the screen, fixed clamp elements carried by said bar adapted to engage one side of a sash rail,
pivoted levers mounted on said cross bar and movable clamp elements carried by said levers adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the opposite side of the sash rail by movement of said levers.
4. A sash clamp for roll window screens comprising a cross bar attached to the free end of the screen, fixed clamp elements carried by said bar adapted to engage one side of a sash rail, a centrally hinged bar extending longitudinally of said cross bar, each section of the hinged bar being pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said cross bar, and movable clamp elements connected to the free ends of said hinged bar adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the opposite side of the sash rail upon movement of said hinged bar.
