Description

w. F. HEDDING.
Blackng-Boxes.
FIGA.
WILLIAM F. REDDING, OF NEY YORK, N. Y.
EMPRGVEMENT IN BLACKING-BOXES.
Specification forming part ofLetiers Patent No. lL/S, dated May 26, 1874; application tiled March 20, 1874.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BEDDING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in Blacking-Boxes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
To enable the public to understand the nature of my said invention, and those who are skilled in the mechanic arts to construct the same, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a perspective view of a blacking-box, B, having my improvement attached to the same, which consists in the ooverAbeing secured to and revolving with the handle H by means or rivets l and2. The latter rivet 2 constitutes an eccentric pivot passing down inside and through the bottom of the box B, and secured to the handle H inA a similar manner to l, so that the lid and handle will revolve upon the said eccentric-pin 2 in the position shown at Fig. 2, which represents a side elevation ofthe box B when open. The cover A forms a shield to protect the hand from being soiled by the brush, as well asto support and assist the handle II to irmly clamp and cover the box perfectly tight when closed, as shown at Fig. l.
I am aware that revolving covers and handles are in common use when applied to blacking-boxes; but the novelty of my invention consists in the construction of the handle H secured to and forming apart of the cover or lid of the boxB,both revolving upon the saine eccentric-pin 2, Figs. l and 2, so that the cover performs the triple functions of covering and clamping the box and protecting the hand.
Vhat I claim as new and useful, and wish to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the box B, constructed as described, the cover A, and handle H pivoted together, as shown, and secured to the box B, as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof Ihereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. REDDING.
