Description

S. MARKS.
$011001 SLATE.
(No Model.)
No. 412,194. Patented Oct. 1, 1889.
FIG-J.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
SOLOMON MARKS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PARAGON SLATE COMPANY, OF OHIO.
SCHOOL-SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $12,194., dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed May 18, 1889. Serial No. 311,332. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON MARKS, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements on Slates, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of one end, being the same as the upper end of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, the side view of the slate. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the dotted line as as, Fig. 2; Fig. at, view of the edge of the slate being the same as the right-hand edge of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is the end opposite the one shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference throughout the several drawings denote the same parts.
This invention relates to improvements in school-slates, and has for its object the arrangement of several slates and a pencil in a compact accessible form in one frame.
In the drawings, on, m, and m represent the different slates.
a, a, a", (Z, f, and 72. represent portions of the frame, which is best made of Wood.
The pieces f, f, a, and 7t, forming the fixed parts of the frame, are firmly joined together at the corner in the usual manner, and are grooved with three sets of parallel grooves adapted to receive the slates m, m, and m". In the sectional drawing, Fig. 3, the slate m is shown partly withdrawn from the groove 7t. The slate m is firmly secured to the piece a, which, when in position, forms part of the frame. In like manner the slate m is secured to the piece a, and also the slate m" is in like manner secured to the piece (Z. The pieces a and a, with their attached slates m m, may be withdrawn from the grooves at the end and replaced at pleasure and secured by the button Z, and the piece (Z, with its attached slate m", may be in like manner Withdrawn from the side, which may or may not be secured by a button. A socket p (shown in dotted lines) is bored into one of the solid sides of the frame, (shown in the drawings as if made in f to receive the pencil 0,) and is closed with the cover 0.
The cushions i, projecting from the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, are not part of my invention, but are usual in schoohslates.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A slate consisting of a frame having fixed parts ff hformed with slate-grooves, and the removable parts, and the removable slates secured to the removable parts, substantially as shown and described.
2. A slate consisting of the fixed parts f, f, h, and a, having slate-grooves, the removable slate m, having the removable part a secured thereto, the slate m and the button Zsecured to the fixed part a, substantially as shown and described.
3. A slate consisting of the fixed parts f, f h, and at, having slate-grooves, the removable slate m, having the removable part a secured thereto, and the slate m", having the removable part (Z secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
4. A slate consisting of the fixed parts f, f, h, and at, having slate-grooves, the removable parts a, a", and d, and the removable slates m, m, and m", secured, respectively, to the removable parts, substantially as shown and described.
5. A slate consisting of a frame having grooves for three slates, slates removable from said grooves, the outer slates being removed in the same direction and the middle slate being removed in a direction at right angles to the outer slates, substantially as shown and described.
'6. A slate consisting ofthe parts a, a, a, fif', d, and 71, which form the frame, said frame having grooves n adapted to receive the slates m m m", being securely attached to the parts a, a, and (Z of the frame, the parts a and a with the slates attached being secured in position by the button Z, said frame having a socket p bored in one side to receive a pencil, substantially as shown and described.
The foregoing specification of my invention signed by me this 1st day of March, A. D. 1889.
SOLOMON MARKS.
