WITNESS nvmnon UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALDEN BIGGS, JR, on WESTHAMPTON, NEW YORK.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,798, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed February 18, 1898. Serial No. 670,765. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALDEN BIGGS, J r., a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Zest, hampton, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following isa full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This'invention relates to baskets of the kind which are subjected to unusually heavy work; and the object is to provide a cheap strong basket which is adapted for heavy rough work-such as handling oysters, clams, &c. and in which provision is made for the drainage of water and sediment therefrom.
The invention consists of a basket constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated. by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved basket. Fig. '2 is a bottom View thereof, and Fig; 3 is a perspective view of a detail.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a basket constructed, preferably, of strong wicker-wareor a strong band of flexible wood bent into the form of a spiral. Suitable braces a are secured to the body portion of said basket and preferably fastened thereto by means of strong lacing c of any desired material suitable for the purpose. About the upper edge of the body portion of the basket is secured areinforcing-rim a which may be of wood or metal, as desired.
Upon a suitable portion of the body of the basket, preferably midway between the braces, is secured a combined brace and handle portion B, which is secured to the basket in any desired manner,.but preferably by means of lacing, as above described. The brace B is formed by bending a strip of wood or wicker-ware ata point on either side of the center thereof, forming upwardly-projecting extensions 1), which projecta suitable distance above the upper rim of the basket. The strip B is again bent at its upper portion to form suitable handles, and is then carof the basket, thus obviating a common de.
fectin baskets of this kind in which the handle is liable to become detached from the basket when subjected to rough usage. By reason of the spiral construction a suitable space is formed between each convolution of the spiral, thus affording perfect ventilation and unimpeded exit for water, sediment, and
the like,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A basket, the body portion and bottom of which are composed of a spirally-wound strip of suitable material, said basket being also provided at the top thereof with a reinforcing annular strip, and side braces which are secured thereto, and which extend downwardly and across the bottom, said braces being connected with the spiral coils of which the body and bottom are formed, substantially as shown and described.
2. A basket, the body portion and bottom of which are composed of a spirally-wound strip ofsuitable material, said basket being also provided at the top thereofwith a reinforcing annular band or strip, and said basket being provided with braces which are passed across the bottom and up the sides thereof, said braces being connected with the spiral coils of which the body and bottom are composed, and with the annular reinforcing strip or band at the top thereof, and one of said braces at the opposite sides being projected upwardly to form handles, and bent downwardly and secured to the spiral coils which form the body of the basket, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name,'in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of February, 1898.
ALDEN BIGGS, JR.
