This invention consists in the combination, with a pair of wheels, of two open-mouthed or gong-shaped bells mounted upon the axle` of said wheels, and provided with a clapper, one or more, the said parts being so arranged that the act of drawing the toy along the iioor will cause the clapper or elappers to strike the bells, and thereby produce harmonious sounds, and providing a new toy for the amusement of children.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical axial section of my improved toy 5 and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section taken on the plane of the line x Fig. 1.

A A designate a pair of 'wheels, which are secured upon opposite ends of an axle, B, in any suitable manner, say by being screwed upon the axle, as shown in Fig. 1. C C are two open-mouthed or gongshaped bells, which are secured to the said axle B in any suitable manner, with their mouths facing each other, but with suicient space between to constitute a throat to permit the escape of sound. They are shown as mounted upon the axle B in such formed upon the axle, the wheels A A beingi screwed' upon the axle after the bells hai-e been applied thereto, the ends of the axle being battered over to keep the wheels and bells from rotating independently of the axle. It is, however, obvious that the axle may be provided with squared ends, which may pass through square holes in the bells and wheels, and the ends of the axle be battered over, as before. This will obviate the cutting of screwthreads. D is the clapper of the bell, which is loosely suspended from the axle B. I have shown it as depending from the lower end of a chain or link, s, the other end of said chain or link encircling a groove formed inthe said axle B. The bells C C are provided with teats or projections a a, so arranged that when the bells are revolved the said teats will be brought in contact with the clapper D, and the bells caused to sound. P designates a tongue, by which to draw the toy along the floor. In the example shown this tongue is merely a loop of wire, having its ends bent loosely around the hubs of the bells, as will be clearly understood by reference to the drawing.

I will here remark that it is obvious that the axle B may be made sufficiently long to receive upon it several pairs of bells of dilferent tones, or, indeed, instead of a central axle, B, the wheels may be connected nearer their peripheries by two or more rods or bars, and upon such rods suitable-sized open-mouthed or gong bells may be arranged in the saine manner as shown with respect to the axle B.

I will also remark that I am perfectly familiar with United States Letters Patent No. 84,368, of 1868, to E. G. Cone; No. 130,690, of 1872, to E. C. BARTON, (myself5) and No. 130,818, of 1872, to W. H. Nichols, which pat ents contain some of the elements used in the construction of the device hereinabove described. I do not, therefore, wish to be undersood as claiming in this application any of the features described and claimed in any of the said patents.

W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the wheels A A, a pair of openniouthed or gong-shaped bells, C C, provided with teats or projections a a, a clapper, D, and an axle or cross-rod, B, connecting the said wheels, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.

2. The combination, with the devices or elements set forth in the preceding claim, of the tongue or draft-bar P, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
