UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
IRENE A. BRANSON, OF PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONEi HALF TO .IOI'IN W. ROUSI-I, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,926, dated August 29, 1899.
Application JUDB 21; 1899. Serial. N0. 721,333. (N0 mOtIBL) To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, IRENE A.' BRANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lPagosa Springs, in the county of Archuleta and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Bells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to toy bells.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production, and which will aiford amusement to both young and old.
With this obj ect in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. view of the face of one of the gongs.
In the drawings the same reference charac ters indicate the same parts of the invention.
l denotes the base, provided with uprights or standards 2, connected at their upper ends by a cross-piece 3.
4 denotes a transverse shaft journaled in suitable bearings in the uprights 2, and 5 denotes gongs rigidly fixed to the shaft by nuts (i. The inner peripheries of these gongs are provided with annular rows of teats 7, which project inwardly and are adapted to successively engage the clapper 8, which is provided with an eye 9, hung upon the annularlygrooved extremity or free end of the shaft. It is evident that as the shaft is rotated these teats strike the clapper, producing a pleasant sound, and as the clapper is free to swing in every direction it is possible that if the shaft is rotated rapidly the clapper will not successively engage each and every one of the teats, so that by varying the speed of rotation of the shaft various sounds may be produced, and by varying the tone of the gongs sweet blended tintinnabulations will be produced.
Any suitable means may be employed for rotating the shaft, but .that shown is preferred by me, and consists of a beveled gear 10, fixed to the transverse shaft, and a meshing beveled gear 1l, fixed to a vertical shaft 12, which shaft may be rotated by a crank or winch 14.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily apparent without requiring further explanation, and it is to be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, wha is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A toy bell consisting of a base, nprights secured thereto, a transverse shaft j ournaled in said base and provided at its ends with gongs, the inner peripheries of which are provided with annularl y arranged teats, clappers loosely mounted on the ends of the shaft and within the line of movement of the teats, substantially as shown aud'described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IleSSeS.
