SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,606, dated April 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a side view with the rear portion in sect-ion. Fig. 2 is a top view.

My invention relates to mechanical toys;

and it consists in the construct-ion and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body of the vehicle, which is mounted on two larger rear wheels, 13 O, and one smaller front wheel, D. The rear wheels, B C, are secured to and revolve with their axle E, which is supported in bearings F at the lower ends of arms G H, which are connected at their upper ends and form the rear support for the body A. The front wheel, D, is journaled on a bearing at the lower end of a-vertically-dependingarm, l, secured at its upper end to the body A, near the front end of the latter.

The arms G H at the rear end of the body are not essential in the construction of the toy, as the rear end of the body A may be provided on its lower face with boxes, in which the rear axle, E, may be journaled and revolve. The construction first described, however, imparts a more ornamental appearance to the toy, and in the more expensive form of the toy is preferable.

The rear wheels, B and C, are provided on the inner faces of their rims K L with longer and shorter inclined teeth M N.

On the body A of the vehicle, and in front of the rear wheels thereof, is mounted a toy figure, R, of a drummer-boy in a standing position, carrying a drum, gong, or bell, P, or two bells, P Q, as may be preferred, said drum, gong, bell, or bells being secured to the body of the figure in front of the same in a position to be beaten by drum-sticks S in the hands of the figure.

The arms of the figure R. are hinged or pivoted to the body at the shoulders and are bent at the elbows in positions to cause the drum-sticks to strike the drum, gong, bell, or'bells when the arms of the figure are operated.

The arms of the figure are bent to cause the forearms to extend forwardly in a horizontal plane. The hands, forearms, and elbows are bored through horizontally at T, and the drumsticks U, which are of wire with knobs at their front ends, are passed through the bores T in the forearms and are bent outwardly immediately in rear of the elbows of the arms, and extend downwardly and rearwardly until they pass the toothed rims of the wheels B C.

The extensions V of the drum-sticks are on gaged by springs W X, which bear outwardly against said extensions and press them against the teeth M N on the rear wheels, B C, so that when the toy is drawn forward the rear wheels will revolve and cause the drumsticks to beat the drum, gong, bell, or bells, as the case may be.

The short teeth and the longer teeth are so arranged and grouped upon the wheels that when the toy is drawn along said teeth will operate the arms and drum-sticks, and cause the latter to beat in imitation of playing a tune upon the drum, gong, bell, or bells, the time of the beats being governed by the speed at which the toy is drawn along, a cord being attached to the front end of the toy, by which the latter may be drawn along.

I am aware that it is not new to provide a mechanical toy with a figure having hinged arms which are adapted, when the toy has been drawn, to raise and strike a bell, and therefore do not claim such devices, broadly.
