Be it known that I, FRANK K. LOMBARDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego,.in the county of San Diego and State of California7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical 'llo-ys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class 0f mechanical toys which are mounted on wheels adapted to be drawn either forward or backward along the floor or ground and the traction of said wheels putin motion parts or all of certain figures mounted in connection therewith. y

The objects of my invention are, rst, to provide a device of this class in which a plurality of figures may be mounted 1n connection therewith each of which is provided with a different movement'if desired, second, to provide a device of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easily operated and does not readily get out of order, third, to pro-vide a device of this class which may be made to operate from one to a dozen or more of figures without in anv wav changing the con-l struction or operation thereof and, fourth, to provide such a device in which any or all of the parts. if broken or lost, may be readily replaced with a minimum of expenditure.

With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction. combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification. in which:

Figure l is a longitudinal, sectional view of my toy complete and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof.

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The casing l, wheels 2. crank shaft 3, wheel 4, arm 5, tongue 6. figures 7, 8. 9 and l0, and cord l1, constitute the principal parts of my mechanical toy.

It will be here noted that I have shown only four figures. it being, apparent from the operation of these four figures that any number desired may be operated in the saine manner.

box on the bottom surface of wl ich is secured a cover la. This casing is provided in its top surface with a round hole l", adapted for the manipulation of the cord l1 therethrough. In the cover la is provided a round hole lc adapted for the projection of the wheel e therethrough and to turn in any directions therein. This cover is also provided with two slots 1d adapted to allow the wheels 2 to protrude therethrough and rest on the floor or ground beneath. The rear end of the casing is mounted on the extended ends of the crank shaft 3, which extends through the sides of said casing forming a bearing upon which it rests on said crank shaft. In the front end of this casing l is provided a horizontal lug le extending inwardly, in which is pivotally mounted the bifurcated support la which is supported on the axle of the wheel t and which is provided with a shoulder upon which the lug le rests. Upon this pivotal mounting is secured the arm 5 at its top end which extends forward through a slot lf in the casing immediately above the lug` l'3 and to which is pivoted on a horizontal axis the tongue G. It will be here noted that the tongue may be dispensed with and a string or cord used in its place if desired.

Mounted on the crank shaft 3 is a ring 3 provided with a hook to which is attached the cord Il which extends out through the hole 1b. In the top of the casing l adjacent to this hole lb there is attached to the cord 1l a plurality of cords, one or more for each ligure as desired to operate. In the drawing as illustrated by the figure 7 the arms 7n are pivoted on each side of the figure on a vertical axis and the cord llEL extends upwardly and is made with two branches, one extending to each arm of the figure and just above the point where they divide they pass through a hole 7b of the figure so that when the cord 11d is tightened thel arms are thrown apart at their outward extended ends and when the cord is released they immediately swing together at their outward extended ends by reason of the elastic piece 7, the figure 7 representing a cymbals. All of the arms of the different figures are operated in the same manner and by means of the same devices and construction, the only difference being in the manner in which the arms of the figures are mounted as to whether they are on a vertical axis or a horizontal axis or otherwise, and

Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.

It is obvious that with this construction, there is provided a mechanical toy in which the arms of the figure mounted thereon may be made to operate horizontally or vertically or both or intermediate between thel vertical and horizontal; that with the movement of the toy along the ground the traction of the wheels 2 will revolve the crank shaft 3 which will cause an alternate tightening and loosening of the cord 11 which in turn will operate the arms of the figures mounted thereon; that this device is simple and economical of construction, durable and the parts may be inexpensively replaced or the figures may be readily removed and the device used as a toy wagon.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a mechanical toy, the combination of a casing, wheels upon which said casing is mounted, a crank shaft rigidly secured to a portion of said wheels, a plurality of figures mounted on said casing, some proframe or casing is mounted, a crank shaft..

rigidly secured to said wheels, a cord engaging with said crank shaft whereby it may be alternately tightened or loosened with the revolution of the wheels, a plurality of tigures each provided with arms mounted to rotate about a vertical axis to which branches of cord are attached and means in connection with said arms mounted on a vertical axis for normally holding them together' at their extended ends whereby said arms are made to move upon their pivotal mountings with the tightening and loosening of said cords.
