REID ARD, OF SUMTER, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ADVERTISING DISPLAY MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Application filed lliebruary 15, 1911. Serial No. 608,807.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Ben) Ann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State .of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Display Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an advertising display mechanism, and consists of simplified means whereby a suitable figure may be given two motions from a rotating shaft, which may consist of the main shaft of any suitable mechanism such as clock work or the like, or the device may be attached to the wheel of a vehicle.
My invention also consists in so arranging the figure or figures carried; by my device that they will always be approximately vertical and in a position for the purposes in question.
Figure 1 is a side view of the elements of my invention with the two parts of the display figure shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detail of a crank lever member embodying this invention. Fig. 3 shows my invention used in connection with a vehicle wheel, and carrying the figure of a man. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of Fig. 3.
The same figures of reference designate the same parts wherever they are shown.
In the construct-ion shown in the drawings, '1 represents a suitable shaft or other actuating member to which a crank 1 is attached, and which in turn has another crank 4c secured to it by means of a suitable pin or bolt 3. The cranks and bolt in question also serve to hold a figure or device 2, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Another figure or device 6 is secured to the crank 4; by means of a pin or bolt 7.
For the sake of illustration, I show my device attached to a vehicle wheel and carrying the figure of a man.
8 Fig. 3 denotes the wheel. The cranks 4 and 4- are shown connected to the hub of the wheel so as to rotate therewith, and thereby cause the part 9 of a body carried by the crank l on its pin 7 to move upwardly when the portion 10 of the body carried by the pin 3 is moving downwardly, and vice-versa.
The feet 13 and 14 may be weighted with lead or in any other suitable manner so that the figure will remain upright.
In operation, if the wheel is rotated, the crank members will revolve around the common center which in this case is the hub of the wheel and impart to the display figure an up and down motion which gives the figure the appearance of walking. This appearance is rendered even more life -like when the wheel is advancing in the direction of the arrow 15, the figure apparently walking in the direction in which the wheel is turning, the feet alternately rising and lowering themselves from the ground.
It will of course be obvious that many other devices besides the figure of a man can be employed in connection with my display mechanism. It will also be understood that my invention is not limited to the pre cise form herein described, as it is obvious to those skilled in the art that other means may be used to obtain the same result without departing essentially from the features herein claimed by me.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
In a display mechanism, and in combination with a rotative member, of a crank rigidly secured to said member, another crank rigidly secured to the first mentioned crank and means disposed on said cranks for actuating two parts of a figure loosely disposed on said means for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto ai'fix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
REID ARD.
