HIRAM C. IEO'UTS, RHONESBOBO, TEXAS.
TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM C. Fon'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhonesboro, in the county of Upshur and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ioys, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy for the use of children, the same being of the type adapted to be drawn over the floor or ground and which, when so drawn or advanced over the floor or ground, cannot topple over on its side.
It is well known that a large number of toys for children, and of the type which are adapted to be drawn by means of a string, due to their construction and arrangement, ofttimes turn over on the side and are thus rendered inoperative, thereby causing great annoyance to the child and necessitating the replacing of the toy in an upright position before it can be further advanced over the ground.
My invention contemplates a toy which is so constructed and arranged that it cannot readily topple over on its side and Whether pulled, jerked or thrown around by the child, will at all times maintain an upright and operative position.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is'a plan view of the toy; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the toy on the line 22 in Fig. -1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of my device. Fig. 4- is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4.4c in Fig. 8.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a frame 10 and which is preferably made of a single piece of wire 11 doubled and looped at its medial portion to provide an eye 12 and to which is secured a suitable cord 13, by means of which the toy is drawn over the ground, said wire 11 being further bent to provide parallel sides 14 and having its ends at th e rear of the frame connected as shown. Disposed between the sides 14: of the frame 10 are a series of tubular wheels 15, through which loosely n Specification of Letters Patent.

pass axles 16 having their ends secured in any suitable manner to the sides of the frame. The wheels 15 each consist of a hub 17 and end flanges 18 which have faces 19 inclined in opposite directions, providing a periphery 20, said flanges due to their conical construction being adapted to prevent the placing of the toy upon end, as will be clearly seen.
When the device is drawn over the ground, pulled or jerked by the cord 13, it will be clearly apparent that the sides of the frame will. not afford an effective support for holding the device on end and the construction of the flanges 18 forming parts of the wheels will further prevent the device from toppling over and standing up on its side and the ends of the wheels, whereas the wheels supporting the frame in spaced relation will permit of readily advancing the toy over the floor or ground.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 the wheels are indicated by the numeral 21. and are of substantially the same construction as the wheels 15 in the preferred form, with the exception that the wheels 21 are mounted upon axles 22 having their inner ends carried by the sides 14 of the frame 10 so that the frame will lie between opposed pairs of wheels as clearly set forth, thus also providing a toy which cannot be stood up on the ends of the wheels or on its side.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a toy, the combination with a frame providing sides. of wheels on the frame and lying between the sides thereof, said wheels each consisting of a hub and opposed flanges haying oppositely inclined faces.
2. In a toy. a wire-like frame, and wheels supporting said frame. said wheels each consisting of a hub and side flanges. the faces of which are inclined in opposite directions.
3. In a toy, a frame, and wheels supporting said frame. said wheels having inclined faces preventing the toy from standing on its side.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
